First of all I would just like to congratulate the Susan G Komen for finally making the decision to cut ties with Planned Parenthood, the nations largest abortion provider. I might actually participate in a "Race for the Cure" event this year. The reasoning?
Komen said it could not continue to fund Planned Parenthood because it has adopted new guidelines that bar it from funding organizations under congressional investigation. The House oversight and investigations subcommittee announced in the fall an investigation into Planned Parenthood’s funding.
While I think that their reasoning is faulty, the results are nonetheless encouraging. Democrats at every turn have blocked the repeated attempts by Republicans and Conservatives to remove federal funding from PP, due to the fact that PP uses the money for abortions, which it denies.
But seriously, who buys that? If I gave you twenty dollars and told you to use it for gas in your car, but you use the cash to buy a CD, and use your debit card to put the gas in, you could deny using the cash to purchase the CD on the grounds that the money was freed up from somewhere else. But I digress.
In some ways, the Komen decision isn’t particularly surprising. The group has been under pressure from anti-abortion rights groups not to fund Planned Parenthood. It also hired a vice president last year who had previously advocated for the group’s defunding in her run for Georgia governor. With a congressional investigation underway, Komen pulled its support.
But there is another reason why Komen should seriously look at NEVER funding this sham of an organization again. The fact that PP doesn't even provide mammograms in most of its clinics is a huge reason that Komen shouldn't send a nickel to the group.
Lila Rose, from LA based Live Action, who is notorious for catching PP in awkward situations (i.e. providing a person dressed as a pimp advice on how to conduct "business") ran a new undercover investigation into the group to ascertain how readily available mammograms were. The conclusion is shocking:
The group said it secretly recorded telephone conversations between a Live Action actor posing as a woman seeking mammograms and Planned Parenthood employees at 30 clinics in 27 states in which the supposed patient was told the breast exams were not available.
“Every Planned Parenthood, without exception, tells her she will have to go elsewhere for a mammogram, and many clinics admit that no Planned Parenthood clinics provide this breast cancer screening procedure,” according to the group’s news release.
“ ‘We don’t provide those services whatsoever,’ admits a staffer at Planned Parenthood of Arizona. Planned Parenthood’s Comprehensive Health Center clinic in Overland Park, KS explains to the caller, ‘We actually don’t have a, um, mammogram machine, at our clinics,’ ” the news release said.
Of course PP has come back saying that the difference is that they only offer "breast exams" and not "mammograms", the difference involving an x-ray scan. This is in direct contradiction to what the president of PP said on the Joy Behar show some time back.
The Bottom Line is this: If they don't offer a specialized service such as a mammogram, and only offer a basic service such as a breast exam, then why give them funding which to go to a free clinic which would already be offering the service?
Way to go Komen. Keep it up and don't backpedal on this one.
