AFA Prayer Alert: Marriage is at Risk at Supreme Court
AFA Calls on All Christians in America to Pray for Marriage

As the Supreme Court prepares to hear oral arguments for California’s Proposition 8 on March 26 and the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) on March 27, the American Family Association, the nation’s leading organization on the frontlines of America’s culture war, calls all Christians to fervent prayer, as God-ordained marriage hangs in the balance.

DOMA defines marriage for federal purposes exclusively as the union of one man and one woman, and protects the right of each state to craft its own marriage policy. Prop 8 amended California's state constitution to give maximum legal protection to natural marriage in the Golden State, and was supported by over 7 million voters, yet one judge deemed it necessary to ignore these voters and bring marriage between one man and one woman to the high court.

Tim Wildmon, president of the American Family Association, says the stakes for our nation's moral understanding of sexuality, marriage and family could not be higher.

“God has defined marriage as the union of one man and one woman, and Jesus affirmed God's definition of marriage in Matthew 19, Wildmon continues. Because Jesus Himself defined this institution with words from His own lips, natural marriage is clearly a part of the gospel we are to proclaim and defend.

“We know from Scripture, common sense and research that homosexual behavior is immoral, unnatural and unhealthy. We should not normalize this behavior by enshrining it in our marriage laws. We also know from Scripture, common sense and social research that the optimal nurturing environment for young children is in a home where they are raised by a mom and a dad.”

Research* has shown that placing children in homosexual households deliberately deprives children of either a mother or father and that children thrive and do best when being raised by their biological mother and father.

If the Supreme Court overturns DOMA and Prop 8, the consequences for self-government, marriage, children and America will be devastating - as devastating to the sanctity of marriage as Roe v. Wade has been for the sanctity of life.

American Family Association is asking for fervent prayer that God’s truth about marriage and the family will prevail in the deliberations and decisions of our Supreme Court.

American Family Association (AFA) a non-profit 501(c3) organization was founded in 1977 by Donald E. Wildmon, who was pastoring First United Methodist Church in Southaven, Mississippi, at the time.  Since 1977, AFA has been on the frontlines of America’s culture war. The original name of the ministry was National Federation for Decency but was changed to American Family Association (AFA) in 1988.

Today, AFA is one of the largest and most effective pro-family organizations in the country with over two million online supporters and approximately 180,000 paid subscribers to the AFA Journal, the ministry's monthly magazine. In addition, AFA owns and operates nearly 200 radio stations across the country under the American Family Radio (AFR) banner.

Other divisions of AFA include American Family Radio, the AFA Foundation and, an online news provider that is syndicated around the world. AFA maintains activist web sites such as and that rally Christian activists to contact companies asking them to drop their advertising from objectionable TV shows. AFA web sites average over 40 million hits and five million visitors each month.

AFA uses all these means to communicate an outspoken, resolute, Christian voice throughout America.
