An appeal from weary parents to the FCC, President Bush

"We are tired of the network’s constant bombardment of illicit sex. We want something done." Don Wildmon, AFA president.

Today, 15 national pro-family groups and organizations issued a press release, calling on Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Michael Powell to stop the foot-dragging and begin enforcing Obscene and Indecent Broadcast laws allowed by United States law and the FCC’s own regulatory power.

“Those whom the government has entrusted with the public airwaves have repeatedly abused the privilege afforded them,” says American Family Association president Don Wildmon. “We are tired of the network’s constant bombardment of illicit and promiscuous sex. We want something done.”

In a letter to Powell, the groups specifically asked the FCC to investigate numerous episodes of FOX network’s airing of “Boston Public.” The letter referred to several story lines in which students and teachers engaged in sexually explicit dialogue and activities.

The group letter told Powell, “It is our view that shows like ‘Boston Public’ and its ilk do not belong in prime time when any child in America can see them. We hope that you will agree.”

Wildmon says the networks are out of control. “At almost every turn, network programs are promoting the total opposite of what most parents want for their children. Because they continue to ignore our pleas for common decency, we must encourage parents to appeal to those who are accountable for allowing it."

Dear Chairman Powell,

Because the public airwaves belong equally to all Americans, please stop the incessant barrage of filth by a select few networks who profit from it. Television should be used for uplifting and encouraging our families, not embarrassing parents who watch it with their children.

As a parent, I am outraged that the FCC has failed to enforce broadcast indecency laws. I support the American Family Association and others in calling for an official FCC investigation of FOX network’s airing of “Boston Public.”

Sincerely,
(your name)

Dear President Bush,

As a parent, I appeal to you and your administration to strongly encourage the FCC to enforce current laws regarding obscene and indecent television programming by the major television networks.

Each day, our families are overwhelmed by the excessive amount of sex, violence, and profanity allowed on publicly-owned airwaves. The networks have abused their privilege and should be held accountable for their disregard of common decency and respectable television.

Please know that I am praying for you and hope you will speak out on behalf of millions of parents who are weary from having our pleas ignored by the networks and the FCC.

Sincerely,
(your name)

Other Federal Communications Commission members:

Commissioner Michael J. Copps
Commissioner Kathleen Q. Abernathy
Commissioner Kevin J. Martin
