AFA Action Alert!Special message to Tennessee familiesUniversity of Tennessee hosts blasphemous playFebruary 6, 2003The University of Tennessee has defended its decision to allow a student-run theater group to present "Corpus Christi" on the Knoxville campus. The play features a homosexual Christ-like figure named Joshua and 12 other male characters, most of whom bear the names of Christ's disciples. It is scheduled to run February 4-8. "The intent of the play is to depict Jesus as a homosexual who has sex with his disciples, and then is crucified for being ‘king of the queers,’" said AFA Chairman Don Wildmon. The play is being funded by Tennessee taxpayer dollars and he is shocked to learn the University president defends it. UT President John Shumaker offered the customary liberal response to hate speech directed toward Christianity, saying in a public statement, "The University of Tennessee remains firmly committed to protecting the constitutional rights of freedom of speech and expression, even when many find it highly offensive." Wildmon hopes university alumni, large donors, and state legislators will use their influence to stop blasphemous plays on university and college campuses in the state. "The decision to present Corpus Christi was never about free speech," said Wildmon, "It was chosen to make a political statement and slander the Christian faith." ACTION NEEDEDTell UT president John Shumaker you are offended that a taxpayer funded university defends religious aggression.Your letter of concer will be sent to President Shumaker, members of the Board of Trustees, legislators, and Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen.
