FCC continues to ignore pleas to enforce indecency laws
The FCC Commissioners are allowing television networks...to break one taboo after another. When will the abuses against public trust end? - Don Wildmon, AFA president
February 22, 2002
Again, this week, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has tainted its image by allowing frontal nudity on network television. A formal complaint by American Family Association (AFA) is asking the FCC to investigate violations of broadcast indecency laws, after ABC aired the controversial “NYPD Blue” last Tuesday night.
“This week's episode included a woman's exposed breasts, in addition to a story line with a clear admission of mother-son incest,” said AFA president Don Wildmon. “It makes me wonder if the FCC has a clue as to what’s going on.”
Wildmon also questioned whether the FCC’s definition of indecency lacks merit. He referred to an FCC “letter of denial” he received this week. On September 14, 2001, AFA filed a complaint with the FCC after a radio station in Memphis, TN aired comments by Howard Stern, suggesting that prostitutes donate their “services” to New York City fireman as they searched for missing people buried under World Trade Center rubble. “The comments were very specific as to what the ‘services’ should be, yet the FCC decided it wasn’t indecent enough to warrant action,” he said.
Wildmon said as the networks persist in pushing the indecency envelope, those who are responsible for controlling content on the public-owned airwaves look the other way. “The FCC Commissioners are allowing television networks and radio stations to break one taboo after another. When will the abuses against public trust end?

(Sample letters)
Dear Chairman Powell,
Because the public airwaves belong equally to all Americans, please stop the incessant barrage of filth by a select few networks who profit from it. Television should be used for uplifting and encouraging our families, not embarrassing parents who watch it with their children.
As a parent, I am outraged that the FCC has failed to enforce broadcast indecency laws. I support the American Family Association and others in calling for the FCC to vigorously apply and enforce indecency laws.
Sincerely,
(your name)
Dear President Bush,
As a parent, I appeal to you and your administration to strongly encourage the FCC to enforce current laws regarding obscene and indecent television programming by the
major television networks.
Each day, our families are overwhelmed by the excessive amount of sex, violence, and profanity allowed on publicly-owned airwaves. The networks have abused their privilege
and should be held accountable for their disregard of common decency and respectable television.
Please know that I am praying for you and hope you will speak out on behalf of millions of parents who are weary from having our pleas ignored by the networks and the FCC.
Sincerely,
(your name)
