4/3/03 - Michigan city council votes to continue nude swimming in city pool

Saline, Michigan citizens are angry at their city council for allowing a local nudist group to rent the town's taxpayer-funded Saline Recreation Complex swimming pool for parties that are visible to the public through windows. Despite the overwhelming support by townspeople to shut down the practice, the city council voted 4-3 to allow the practice to continue.

Gary Glenn, president of the American Family Association of Michigan says the ramifications are placing other Michigan towns in danger of facing similar encounters. "Because nudists have gained access to a tax-funded facility in Saline, it's likely they will demand other privileges, and in other towns."

Saline, southwest of Detroit, began renting its pool facility to the Southeast Michigan Naturists about four years ago after checking with the city attorney, who said the town cannot discriminate against any particular group based on its philosophy.

Glenn says the attorney’s position is severely flawed and exposes children to the danger of sexual assault. "It might also be the philosophy of a child molester to walk into the Saline pool off the street, strip down nude, and watch and associate with naked children - not via a photo, but live and in person!"

"It’s not an issue of discrimination," he says. "The issue is common sense, and the safety of children."
