Dear AFA Alert Team,

I have both good and disturbing news. First, the good news: Some of you took action with Yahoo! on the 4/12/01 AFA Alert and I am pleased to report that Yahoo! has begun to remove child porn and obscenity from their servers. I believe your actions combined with publicity surrounding a meeting I had with Attorney General John Aschcroft about these matters have begun to make a difference.

Now, the disturbing news: Two of the largest department stores in America have severed ties with KingdomBuy.com, a Christian online shopping mall, after being targeted by advocates of online porn. JC Penney and Nordstrom have severed their relationship with KingdomBuy.com after an organized online effort by members of Yahoo! sex clubs. The e-mail campaign targeted KingdomBuy.com because of its affiliation with AFA.

We have been made aware of a Yahoo! sex club named - "Don't Close The Adult Clubs" - made up of 11,500 disgruntled members who are very upset over Yahoo!'s removal of "adult" clubs. The recently began a vigorous campaign and have targeted retailers involved in KingdomBuy.com's "faith-based giving program" -- a program supporting more than 9,000 churches, ministries, and Christian schools and missionary organizations. Five days after the e-mail campaign began, JC Penney and Nordstrom decided to immediately cancel their association with the online shopping mall.

Here is one example of their strategy that was directed toward JC Penney: Message #3983 at the Yahoo! sex club includes the following instructions to 11,500 members:

I would suggest that sending "threatening" messages to various companies would probably not have a tendency to have the desired effect.. Whatever is sent should be somewhat cordial and well thought out... Here is a draft of a letter I have been personally working on lately:

To Whom It May Concern:

It has come to our attention that your company is associated with the American Family Association's online shopping website entitled "Kingdombuy.com".. This organization, while claiming to be "pro-family", is actually in effect pro-censorship who's tactics include, but are not limited to, activism which promotes the creation and/or changing of state and national laws which severly limits individuals' rights of free choice.. We find this organization's viewpoints and tactics extremely narrow-minded and oftentimes underhanded..

We have done numerous purchases of products from your business in the past.. Your company is, of course, free to support, associate and align itself with whatever organizations it sees fit.. However, we, in good conscience, choose not to do business with or purchase products from a company that chooses to associate itself with an organization so adamant in their desire to strip people of their freedom of speech, freedom of association, and freedom of individual choice.. Therefore, we have decided to cease purchasing items from your business until such time that you decide against allying yourselves with such organizations.. This is an issue we feel strongly about, and we hope you will take this letter into consideration..

Sincerely,
XXXXX

This would, of course, only tend to be appropriate with businesses that you have actually purchased products from in the past.. :) If anyone has any suggestions for a more "generalized" letter to send to various businesses, I'm sure posting those suggestions would be appreciated by many here...

[End Yahoo! sex club message]

I am pleased to be associated with KingdomBuy.com President Gary Sutton who tells AFA he is shocked that reputable retailers such as JC Penney would be persuaded by a small group of porn advocates.

Under KingdomBuy.com's giving program, a percentage of purchases go to support Christian organizations of the buyer's choice. Major retailers affiliated with the online shopping mall include Wal-Mart, Dell Computer, Avon, FTD, Office Max, and Hickory Farms. Sutton says his hope is that people will continue to do online shopping and support the churches and ministries through KingdomBuy.com.

JC Penney has not returned phone calls to AFA or KingdomBuy.com.

Thank you for your support.

Donald E. Wildmon
AFA President
