Tax-Payer Funded PBS Film Slams Boy Scouts
Public money is grossly misused as 'gay' advocacy tool
June 18, 2001
American Family Association finds it most disturbing that hard-earned tax dollars are being used to attack one of America's most beloved institutions - The Boy Scouts of America. The Public Broadcasting Service tomorrow, June 19, will air a documentary titled Scouts Honor that takes aim at the Boy Scouts´ policy of excluding homosexuals. The film is carefully timed to coincide with “gay pride” celebrations this month.
According to the Culture and Family Institute, The PBS film, Scout’s Honor, is directed by homosexual activist filmmaker Tom Shepard and funded by the Independent Television Service, a subsidiary of PBS. The taxpayer-funded corporation is billing the one-sided film as creating “a modern interpretation of the scouting values of courage and honor.”
Pro-family activist Guyla Mills of Kerusso Ministries has seen Scout’s Honor and calls it a “well-produced but very biased tool for ‘gay’ advocacy.”
Mills watched the film at a screening at last month’s homosexual “Pridefest America” celebrations in Philadelphia. (Mills was monitoring the event for Kerusso’s Americans for Truth Project.) Afterward, she said, homosexual James Dale whose unsuccessful attempt to remain in the Boy Scouts took him all the way to the Supreme Court—gave a pep talk to the crowd, telling them how to continue the struggle against the Scouts.
“That’s what this is about,” Mills said. “It’s another tool to mobilize homosexual activists to go to their local community and take actions against the Boy Scouts.”
The Boy Scouts of America was chartered by Congress in 1916 as an educational program for boys to build character, train them in citizenship responsibilities and help them develop personal fitness. Scouts take an oath that says, "On my honor, I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight."
ACTION NEEDED
Scout’s Honor airs nationwide this Tuesday, June 19, so you must take action immediately.
Please Take These Two Steps:
1) Point your browser to the PBS Web site and use the “Station Finder” to locate information about your local PBS station. You simply enter your zip code and be taken to your local PBS station. Then call and e-mail the station’s officials and respectfully urge them to cancel the showing of Scout’s Honor. Let them know how you feel about the use of your taxpayer dollars for the production and dissemination of a one-sided “hit piece” on the Boy Scouts of America — a piece that says it is good for fathers to teach their children how to become homosexual activists.
2) Contact the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB)and politely urge them to stop awarding taxpayer dollars to PBS without a mandate to fairness. Point out that the film Scouts Honor is one-sided and a gross misuse of tax dollars. Appropriations from Congress help CPB fund cultural, educational, and informational programming for more than 1,000 public television and radio stations, mostly Public Broadcasting Service, National Public Radio, and Public Radio International stations. Funding has been approved through 2003, despite a 1999 investigation that revealed some PBS stations had given their mailing lists to the Democratic party for fundraising purposes.
