AFA Calls "Scouts Honor" A Miserable Failure
“To trash the Boy Scouts is one thing, but to use taxpayer funds to do it is an outrage.” AFA Pres. Don Wildmon
June 20, 2001
The American Family Association (AFA) today criticized the overtly pro-homosexual film, Scout’s Honor, calling it another attempt to convince Americans that men who have sex with men make great camping partners for young boys.
AFA President Don Wildmon called Tuesday night’s Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) showing “a shameless attack on the character and integrity of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), which will strengthen the resolve of parents nationwide to support the Boy Scout policy banning homosexual men as leaders.”
Wildmon, himself an Eagle Scout, said the one hour PBS television program carelessly assaulted the nation’s most respected boy’s organization with continuous charges of discrimination, bigotry and prejudice.
“To trash the Boy Scouts is one thing, but to use taxpayer funds to do it is an outrage,” Wildmon said. “Every taxpayer ought to contact his local PBS, and his congressman, and give him an earfull.”
Randy Sharp, AFA Director of Special Projects, said Scout’s Honor also noticeably failed its attempt to portray homosexuals as victims. He cited sound bites that suggested the Boy Scouts of America were a contributing factor in homosexual suicides and that parents of Scouts who objected to their sons marching in a Gay Freedom Parade “are really evil.” He said, “The true victims are millions of Boy Scouts. The BSA continues to be the target of a radical group of whiners who refuse to accept a Supreme Court ruling against them.”
Sharp said Scout’s Honor was not a legitimate look at the BSA policy, but obvious homosexual propaganda. “It was produced by a homosexual activist filmmaker, funded by homosexual activist groups, and clearly designed to bash the Boy Scouts of America.” He said the majority of Americans support the Boy Scouts, and support the Boy Scout policy. “The film was not able to show an ‘anti-scout’ viewpoint from mainstream America. That’s because it just isn’t there,” he said.

ACTION NEEDED
Do you agree with AFA Pres. Don Wildmon that to trash the Boy Scouts is one thing, but to use our taxpayer funds to do it is an outrage? If so, please take the action steps.
1) Contact National PBS:
Contact PBS Pres./CEO Pat Mitchell and respectfully share how you feel about the use of taxpayer dollars for the airing of "Scouts Honor" - a one-sided “hit piece” on the Boy Scouts of America.
PBS President/CEO Pat Mitchell
Email
Telephone (703) 739-5000
2) Contact Your Local PBS:
A list of major-market PBS affiliates follows at the end of this AFA alert. Or, point your browser to the PBS Web site and use the “Station Finder” to locate information about your local PBS station. You simply enter your zip code and be taken to your local PBS station.
3) Contact your U.S. Senators and member of Congress [phone 202-224-3121]:
As part of the education bill, the Senate passed a measure to protect the Boy Scouts. Contact your senators and representative, and ask them to make sure that the Helms Boy Scout amendment is part of the final bill. Also, ask them to ensure that the Boxer sexual orientation amendment is removed from the bill. That amendment, according to Sen. Michael Enzi, R-Wyo., has a simple intent: ". . . to ensure (that) the constitutional rights of six million Boy Scouts in the United States are not violated by public schools who receive federal education funds."
Politely bring to their attention that PBS has aired the film "Scouts Honor" which is one-sided and a gross misuse of tax dollars. According to PBS's annual financial report, the entity received $43.7 million in "CPB and U.S. Department of Education Grants" in 2000. Funding for FY1997 was only $27.5 million, but nearly doubled to $41.5 million by FY1998. Total revenues for FY2000 were $488.9 million. There are 347 PBS affiliate television stations nationwide. The company says it reaches 99 percent of U.S. homes that have televisions.
4) Contact President Bush:
For some reason, the White House wants the Helms Amendment dropped. Why would The White House align itself with the militant homosexual rights movement? Please contact the White House and ask why they would oppose the Helms Amendment. Phone 202-456-1414 or E-mail.
