In a press release Wednesday, the American Family Association says Attorney General John Ashcroft has been too casual on his promise to curb child pornography on the World Wide Web, leading people to question if recent child kidnapping crimes are the result. “I think we’re seeing the first signs of an epidemic of perversion in which predators snatch children from their mothers’ arms and mutilate their bodies physically, mentally, and sexually,” says Dr. Donald Wildmon, chairman of American Family Association (AFA). “Because the Justice Department has neglected their duty to stop the insidious amounts of child pornography on the Internet, human predators are now in a frenzy to feed their virtual appetite with the bodies of real boys and girls.” Wildmon says Ashcroft promised early and often to make child pornography a top priority in his Cabinet, but has done little to produce results. In the past two months, cable news networks have devoted a vast portion of coverage to stories of children being kidnapped, raped and murdered. In every single case, massive amounts of child pornography was found in the home or on the computers of the men arrested for the crime. “It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out there is a direct relationship between child porn and sex crimes against children,” says Wildmon. He says AFA has provided numerous documents proving Internet giant Yahoo! is a primary distribution center for child pornography through its chat rooms and on-line clubs. A former head of the Justice Department's obscenity division, Pat Trueman, believes the Justice Department can hold Yahoo! criminally responsible for the distribution of obscene materials, including child porn, on its Web site. “Yahoo! provides resources to rapists seeking victims. Yahoo appears to be clearly liable under federal criminal obscenity law.” Wildmon also criticized Yahoo!’s hypocrisy in joining a program to help locate missing children through targeted on-line banner ads while allowing their members to post messages about using children for sexual purposes, including incest. He says if Yahoo! is really concerned about helping children who may be victims of child-molesting kidnappers, they should immediately shut down their chat rooms and online clubs that encourage it. ACTION NEEDEDAFA encourages you to contact Attorney General John Ashcroft's office and tell him to rigidly and aggressively enforce obscenity and child pornography laws. With the recent rash of kidnappings and sexual assaults (including murder) of our nation's children, I implore you to make the prosecution of obscenity a top priority. Specifically, Internet portals like Yahoo! continue to allow the spread of child pornography to flourish. The AFA has assured me they have provided you with ample evidence to begin criminal investigations against online child pornographers. Please let me know that you will begin aggressively going after those who wish to harm our children. Sincerely,
