Caught in a web of deception, corporate sponsors continue to feed concerned consumers misleading information regarding BBBSA’s policy regarding homosexuals who spend time with young boys and girls. A letter from the UPS Foundation, which funds BBBSA, reads, "All volunteers must pass rigorous background screenings and all matches between volunteers and children must be approved by the parents. Any information suggesting otherwise is simply misinformed." Yet Noreen Shanfelter, a BBBSA spokesperson, contradicted the statement when quoted in The Washington Times, "It is possible [a homosexual] could be assigned to a child at school without the parents knowledge, in some cases." Additionally, a copy of the mentoring program permission slip obtained by AFA provides no information about a potential mentor. The after-school based program guidelines specifically state that parental approval is "Not required." The UPS Foundation again quotes directly from BBBSA’s Volunteer Selection Policy and Procedures, "For the past 25 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America has followed a non-discrimination policy that prohibits exclusion of potential volunteers, staff, youth or parents on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, marital status, sexual orientation, veteran status or disability." Last July, Shanfelter told "The New York Blade" the sexual orientation policy has been in effect only "since 1999." The BBBSA Affirmative Action policy confirms her statement over that of the UPS Foundation. Randy Sharp, director of special projects for the American Family Association says, "National sponsors like UPS, Verizon, and others bought the false propaganda fed to them by the national Big Brothers/Big Sisters (BBBSA) organization. The BBBSA has said publicly some parents have no knowledge that their child's mentor is a homosexual, yet corporations are touting BBBSA's 'other story' to their customers." He says it’s a case of "the blind following the blind" and that BBBSA is obviously in a damage control mode at the expense of their corporate sponsors. BBBSA spokesperson Noreen Shanfelter has stated for the public record that homosexuals are partnered with children without parental knowledge and that the BBBSA policy has included "sexual orientation" for less than four years. These statements are contrary to what your company is saying. Someone is not telling the truth. I encourage you to find the truth and reconsider your association with BBBSA. They may be damaging your credibility. You can find documentation which reveals the truth at http:www.afa.net/activism/aa082302.asp Sincerely,
