Disney's ABC Special Features Soft-Core Porn

"It may seem like there's no hope for TV, but at AFA we urge people to continue to take a stand. Let advertisers and local affiliate stations know your views on the sleaze the networks continue to air." AFA President Don Wildmon

It's been a big week for breaking barriers at Disney's ABC television network. On Sunday, November 11, ABC introduced new profanities (in big numbers) to prime-time TV with their Veterans Day movie Saving Private Ryan. The movie also included battlefield scenes that were arguably the most graphic blood-and-gore scenes yet aired on prime-time.

On November 15, sexual titillation was the sole focus of the network's Victoria's Secret Fashion Show: What is Sexy? American Family Association (AFA) noted that, as with Private Ryan, Victoria garnered only about 65% of the normal slate of national advertisers, and two of them were Victoria's Secret commercials. Others included Westin Hotels, Philips Electronics' Sonicare, Verizon Wireless telephone services and a number of movie production companies.

"The networks and producers usually say it's all about money," said Dr. Don Wildmon, president of AFA. "But if they can't get advertisers, and the spots they do sell are no doubt greatly reduced, there must be some other agenda, too. For Disney and ABC to pump so much sex, violence and profanity into one week, they must be looking down the road to a time when they think they will make money."

AFA Journal monitor Pat Centner reviewed the Victoria's Secret special. Centner said, "At least one segment was no less than soft-core porn, and models posed sensuously and seductively throughout the hour." The show was promoted as the "sexiest night on TV," and the "sultry super bowl of underwear." One segment featured the scantily-clad models wearing angels' wings while background music sang, "Hallelujah, Hallelujah!"

Wildmon said, "It may seem like there's no hope for TV, but at AFA we urge people to continue to take a stand. Let advertisers and local affiliate stations know your views on the sleaze the networks continue to air."
