Dear Friend, For the sake of your family, do not shop at any Kmart store this Christmas. Sadly, behind corporate greed, Kmart thinks you don’t care how they act as a corporation. I think you do. And I’m asking you to stand with me. Here’s why: Kmart is a major national distributor of music which promotes brutal violence against family members and law enforcement officers, the gang raping of little girls, and massive doses of carnal profanity. How bad is the music sold by Kmart? Let me put it this way. In my 25 years of defending common decency, I thought I had seen it all. I never imagined music could become this violent and profane. I believe the lyrics are literally beyond the comprehension of most parents, yet Kmart continues to sell it to children. To prove my point, I have decided to let you see for yourself what Kmart is selling to our kids. To do that, I have created a special webpage containing the lyrics of music purchased at a nearby Kmart. (Click here to view the page.) I’m not alone in my shock. U.S. Senator Joe Lieberman agreed with me when he said, “...we heard compelling testimony from several experts indicating that repeated exposure to records that glamorize murder and mayhem, combined with all the other messages the popular culture sends telling kids that killing is cool, can have a harmful influence.” Does Kmart care about the negative social influence of the music they sell? In a Gallup poll, 84% of adults said that violent music lyrics like those found in Kmart are a serious problem. Surprisingly, Kmart continues to disregard what concerns parents. In a nutshell, Kmart evidently thinks that regardless of the negative social impact their music is having on our culture, you’ll continue to be a loyal customer. I think they’ve underestimated the family. I truly believe you care more about the future of our young people than helping a company profit from filth. I’ve decided it is time someone stood up to the corporate irresponsibility of companies like Kmart. Let me assure you that your American Family Association is taking actions to convince Kmart to stop selling violent, profane and pornographic music. I need you to stand with me. Will you contact Kmart and let them know that you refuse to do business with companies that put profits ahead of principle? Letting them know you will shop elsewhere this Chrismas season will send an unmistakable message that you don’t shop for “Blue Light” specials in “Red Light” districts.
