State Farm Insurance considering homosexual partner benefits
Your voice is critical to the decision not yet made.
December 4, 2001
According to an internal document obtained by AFA Journal, State Farm Insurance Company, the nation's number one insurer of both homes and automobiles, may be on the verge of extending health benefits to the domestic partners of its homosexual employees. The document was sent to a State Farm insurance agent in answer to a question about a possible policy change concerning benefits.
"Census statistics tell us that our traditional definition of 'family' is changing. There are now many configurations," it says. "This requires rethinking how we meet the changing needs of our associates and our customers so that we can attract and retain the best and brightest employees." The remainder of the letter is an explanation of why granting domestic partner benefits is the right thing to do.
"If State Farm extends these benefits to same-sex couples, that would be extremely disappointing," said AFA President Donald E. Wildmon. "These benefits have always been reserved for those who are wed - it strengthens the institution of marriage. Extending them to homosexual couples makes a clear statement: State Farm considers same-sex relationships on a par with marriage."
State Farm spokesperson Compain-Romero said the company has considered extending domestic partner benefits and "it is still something that is being reviewed and considered, but no decisions have been made."
Wildmon said State Farm policy already recognizes cross dressers and sex-changers in their nondiscrimination employment policy. “Now, they want to redefine what a family is. I am pretty sure more husbands and wives have State Farm insurance than husbands and ‘husbands’, it could be a costly move.”
ACTION NEEDED
It is critical that State Farm hear from you regarding corporate decisions that affect the traditional American family.
Contact State Farm Insurance and ask them to reject all considerations of domestic partner benefits. Let them know that equating homosexual lovers with traditional married couples would be an insult to their millions of faithful customers.
