Mainstream Media Applaud Showtime’s Perversion
“Does the media not care that this is a self-destructive lifestyle that cuts short the lives of homosexual men?” AFA President Donald E. Wildmon
December 12, 2000
America Family Association is troubled by many of the nation’s top print media outlets, after they issued glowing reviews for cable channel Showtime’s “Queer As Folk,” a new series about sex-obsessed homosexual men.
“The country’s moral fiber is quickly unraveling, and as bad it is has gotten on television in the last 25 years, I never thought I’d see the day when a TV series that shows men having anal sex would be applauded by Time magazine and TV Guide,” said AFA President and Founder Donald E. Wildmon. “There may not be a stopping point now. Television has zeroed in on the deepest parts of the sewer, and it will hit its target.” One of the show’s characters narrates the opening sequence with the words, “It’s all about sex,” and from numerous accounts of the series, that’s an accurate characterization. Robert Peters, President of Morality in Media, a conservative media watchdog group, viewed the first three episodes of Queer As Folk. Besides an explicit depiction of anal sex between a 17-year-old boy and a 29-year-old man Peters said the show also includes depictions of oral sex, group sex, bisexuality, pornography, prostitution and sadomasochism.
Tony Jonas, one of Queer As Folk’s producers, said he was unapologetic about the show’s overt sexuality, admitting to The New York Times, “We pushed this as far as we could go.” He added, “We don’t have to apologize for or whitewash or pretend what gay sexuality is all about.”
Wildmon said that, while he doesn’t expect anything but the worst from Showtime, he was extremely disappointed by the mainstream media’s embracing of Queer As Folk. “Newsweek called it ‘wonderful’ and Time said it was ‘funny and fresh.’ Even the Wall Street Journal called it ‘refreshing,’” he said. “Does the media not care that this is a self-destructive lifestyle that cuts short the lives of homosexual men?”
Wildmon pointed to health statistics which estimate that 30% of all twenty-year-old homosexual males will be HIV-positive or dead of AIDS by the time they are 30. Similarly, in a study published in Oxford University's International Journal of Epidemiology, researchers found that, at age 20, the life expectancy of homosexual and bisexual men is 8 to 20 years less than for all men.
The Medical Institute of Sexual Health reports [ Executive Summary, "Health Implications
Associated with Homosexuality," 1999]:
- "Homosexual men are at significantly increased risk of HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, anal cancer, gonorrhea and gastrointestinal infections as a result of their sexual practices."
- "Women who have sex with women are at significantly increased
risk of bacterial vaginosis, breast cancer and ovarian cancer than are heterosexual women."
- "Domestic violence is...probably more common among homosexuals than among heterosexuals."
- "Significantly higher percentages of homosexual men and women
abuse drugs, alcohol and tobacco than do heterosexuals."
The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention report that men who engage in homosexual behavior are 860% more likely to contract a sexually transmitted disease (STD), increasing up to 500% their risk of contracting HIV/AIDS. Men who have sex with men "have large numbers of anonymous partners, which can result in rapid, extensive transmission of STDs," the CDC warns. "Control of STDs is a central component of HIV infection prevention in the United States; resurgence of bacterial STD threatens national HIV infection prevention efforts."
Gay Health reports that men who have sex with men are 320% more
likely than heterosexuals to have unprotected sex without
telling their partners they're HIV-positive.
“I don’t call those statistics ‘refreshing’ or ‘funny,’” Wildmon said.

It's Not Gay Video
Former homosexuals tell a story few have heard
It's Not Gay presents a story that few have heard, allowing former homosexuals the opportunity to tell their own story in their own words. Along with medical and mental health experts, these individuals express a clear warning that the sanitized version of homosexuality being presented to students is not the whole truth. Uncompromising, yet compassionate, It’s Not Gay is a fair and balanced approach to this challenging subject.
A Special Message to Parents and Grandparents of Teens
On TV, in the movies, in the news and even in many schools, your children and grandchildren are bombarded with the message that homosexuality is normal. In some cases, teens are being encouraged to experiment with homosexual activities.
If you love your teenagers, make sure they see It's Not Gay. Without moralizing, without preaching, without judgemental or hateful language, It's Not Gay reveals the brokenness of the homosexual lifestyle - a story that is seldom portrayed in the media, but lived out daily in broken lives.
Your teens will hear from those who have lived the homosexual lifestyle - their own stories in their own words. Along with medical and mental health experts, these former homosexuals testify to the physical and emotional devastation of homosexual behavior. Before their view is shaped by those who are promoting this tragic agenda, let your teens see the other side of the issue. It could save their lives.
