AFA Applauds Selection Of Sen. Ashcroft To U.S. Attorney General Post
Help Needed To Counter Leftist Opposition
December 27, 2000
AgapePress reports today that there are many reasons why conservatives are celebrating George W. Bush's choice of Senator John Ashcroft for Attorney General. One of them is his views on activist judges.
As an evangelical Christian, Ashcroft's conservative opinions about abortion and a number of other social issues were bound to generate lots of criticism from the left -- and they have. Over the weekend, The New York Times listed a variety of quotes of what Ashcroft has had to say about the proper role of judges. Liberals will be upset, while conservatives will certainly applaud.
In a speech in March 1997, he said, "People's lives and fortunes have been relinquished to renegade judges, a robed contemptuous elite." In 1998, during comments about the nomination of a federal district judge, Ashcroft said, "Frankly, if it is a question of a few in the judiciary defining what the values of the many are in the culture, I think that is anti-democratic."
Also in 1998, he had harsh words for a judge who gave a 90-day sentence to a man found guilty of raping a five-year-old girl. The judge said she was worried about the psychiatric care the man would get in prison. Of that, Ashcroft said he found "this type of social engineering from the bench troubling" -- and he went on to say the needs of the convicted rapist should not be the basis of a sentencing decision.
CNSNews.com has reported that the Ashcroft nomination could mean more porn prosecutions.
There is a groundswell of opposition to Sen. Ashcroft's nomination brewing on the Internet by such leftist organizations as "Planned Parenthood" and "The People For The American Way [PFAW]." PFAW president Ralph G. Neas' statement on the nomination of John Ashcroft to be U.S. Attorney General: "While it is extremely rare for People For the American Way to oppose an Executive Branch nomination, we must oppose strongly the nomination of John Ashcroft to be Attorney General of the United States. The Attorney General of the United States is not only the lawyer for the President, but also the lawyer for the people of the United States. He is the principal enforcer of our nation's civil rights laws. John Ashcroft is the antithesis of the person required to lead the Department of Justice. With the possible exception of Senator Jesse Helms, I do not believe anyone in the United States Senate has a more abysmal record on civil rights and civil liberties. The office of Attorney General is the worst executive branch position for George W. Bush to use as political payback to the far right. This nomination is an insult to every person who is committed to our nation's promise of equal justice for all. The nomination of John Ashcroft to Attorney General is a particular poke in the eye to African Americans after Ashcroft's incredibly irresponsible behavior to block the federal judicial nomination of Judge Ronnie White. This is truly an astonishingly bad nomination."
Planned Parenthood [PPFA] leaders have also expressed strong opposition to the Ashcroft nomination as our next Attorney General. They are mobilizing and calling for strong opposition "to oppose anti-choice ex-Senator." Gloria Feldt, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) said that "the Ashcroft nomination shows that President-elect Bush, is out of step with the majority of Americans, who believe in a woman's right to choose and do not believe government should interfere with personal childbearing decisions."
ACTION NEEDED
Contact your Senators and ask them to support Sen. John Ashcroft's confirmation. Sen. Ashcroft's experience and background qualifies him as an ideal Attorney General who will vigorously enforce the nation's laws while protecting the constitutional rights of its citizens. Urge them to ignore pressure from leftist groups and the pornography vendors in this nation, including AT&T and General Motors, who will certainly oppose Sen. Ashcroft in order to protect their toxic money-making empire.
NOTE: Due to the transition, the following Senators will not be a part of the 107th Congress: Sen. Bryan (D-NV), Sen. Robb (D-VA), Sen. Roth (R-DE), Sen. Mack (R-FL), Sen. Abraham (R-MI), Sen. Grams (R-MN), Sen. Ashcroft (R-MO), Sen. Kerry (D-NE), Sen. Lautenberg (D-NJ), Sen. Moynihan (D-NY) and Sen. Gorton (R-WA).
Email your Senator (listing by name) or Senators by state or you can call the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121 and be connected with their office.
