Abortion Issues Record of Attorney General Designate Senator John Ashcroft
Has gone out of his way to encourage Pro-Life Americans to express themselves peaceably
January 9, 2001
Senator Ashcroft will enforce the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act (FACE).
FACE is the federal criminal statute that punishes those individuals who commit acts of criminal intimidation or violence at abortion clinics.
John Ashcroft has always condemned criminal violence at abortion clinics – or anywhere – and believes individuals who commit these acts of violence and intimidation should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. As Attorney General he will do just that.
In fact, John has gone out of his way to encourage Pro-Life Americans to express themselves peaceably. See St. Louis Post-Dispatch (Tuesday, January 24, 1995):
“One of those new faces, Sen. John Ashcroft, R-Mo., told Missouri marchers Monday morning that they should borrow from the teachings of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
King, Ashcroft said, asked civil rights workers to sign a pledge of nonviolence in which they promised to refrain from the violence of the ‘fist, tongue and heart’ and observe the ordinary rules of courtesy with ‘both friend and foe.’"
This is the reason Ashcroft voted for Senator Schumer’s amendment to the Bankruptcy bill that made debts incurred as a result of abortion clinic violence non-dischargeable in bankruptcy.
Overturning Roe vs. Wade:
President-elect Bush has said the country is not ready to overturn Roe vs. Wade and he will work to pass legislation both sides can agree on such as abstinence education, parental notification, increased adoption, and a ban on partial birth abortion.
