Senator John Ashcroft has been recognized by his Democratic colleagues in the Senate, non-partisan groups, and citizens’ groups for his contributions as Senator and Governor for eliminating government waste, reducing crime by increasing the number of full time cops, improving Missouri’s schools, and curbing unnecessary government spending.
As Democratic Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan noted, he will make a superb Attorney General.
As Missouri Governor, Fortune magazine rated him one of the top ten education governors.
Ashcroft balanced eight consecutive budgets. Financial World and City and State magazines credited Ashcroft with making Missouri one of the best financially managed states in the country.
His conservative approach to spending and government waste has continued in the Senate, where in 1998, Citizens Against Government Waste placed Ashcroft atop its annual list of “Taxpayer Heroes.”
Ashcroft was the only member of the Senate to have a perfect voting record against wasteful government spending.
Senator Ashcroft was endorsed by the Missouri Federation of Police Chiefs and the St. Louis Police Officers Association during his 2000 campaign for his achievements in reducing crime.
Senator Ashcroft earned the endorsement of more than 100 grassroots organizations from across the country focusing on a wide variety of issues, including military readiness, pro-life issues, tax reform, family and social issues, constitutional and civil liberties, and victim's rights.
Other awards presented to Ashcroft include the American Farm Bureau Federation’s highest national honor, The Golden Plow Award for 1999, and the Missouri Farm Bureau’s most prestigious award, The Award for Outstanding Service to Missouri Agriculture.
Senator Ashcroft has received the endorsement from numerous organizations and media outlets including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, The Seniors Coalition, Limelight, 10/30/00 (Major African-American publication in St. Louis), Kansas City Star, and Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States of America Political Action Committee.
