Re-inventing the World - Part 1

While America celebrates her freedom, a worldwide network of organizations is tearing away the very foundations of her hard-won independence. We see signs of this transformation in the strange new labels for education, business, government and other institutions: OBE, STW, TQM, HMO, Third Way.... What do they have in common? How will they change our communities and affect our lives? Are they part of a local agenda or do they point to a global management system? Who defines the terms and sets the standards?

The answers are complex, but these true stories offer some revealing glimpses:

Schools: A California teacher told seven-year old Sallie to stop talking with her friends about Jesus in order to "keep [church and state] apart." Her censure makes sense when we remember that the "outcomes" of UNESCO's worldwide Outcome-Based Education (OBE) system include politically correct beliefs. Sallie's loyalty to the Biblical God didn't fit the new standards. The new management systems include rewards for schools and teachers whose students demonstrate -- on the new student "assessments" -- that they have conformed to the beliefs and values of a global citizen.^[1]

The church: A Colorado mother told her pastor about her concern over multicultural curricula and sex ed programs that introduced her son to contrary values. But the pastor equated criticism of public schools with "politics" and showed no sympathy. He explained that the church's new "mission" statement didn't include controversial issues which could offend people -- especially potential members (called "consumers" by new church managers). ^[2]

The workplace: A Christian manager lost his position in an Illinois company because he refused to renounce the Biblical absolutes behind his convictions. God's unchanging truth didn't fit the new Total Quality Management (TQM) which emphasized "continual change." His unwillingness to compromise had disturbed the consensus process and offended team members who lived by different standards. ^[3]

Silent and unseen half a century ago, this social revolution grew like a stream of water below the surface of our culture for decades. Now, at the dawn of the new millennium, the benign current has become a malignant torrent flooding the land. Too powerful to be ignored, it challenges us to respond before the old pathways and guideposts are destroyed in its wake.

Those who look back can trace the silent triumphs of a diverse army of social "change agents" loosely linked by a common vision of a united world, social solidarity and a global spirituality.^[4] The Aquarian Conspiracy, Marilyn Ferguson's acclaimed 1980 bestseller, shows the collective heartbeat of this movement:

"A leaderless but powerful network is working to bring about radical change in the United States. Its members have broken with certain key elements of Western thought.... This network is the Aquarian Conspiracy.... Broader than reform, deeper than revolution, this benign conspiracy for a new human agenda has triggered the most rapid cultural realignment in history....

"The Aquarian Conspirators range across all levels of income and education.... They are in corporations, universities and hospitals, on the faculties of public schools, in factories and doctors' offices, in state and federal agencies, on city councils and the White House staff, in state legislatures, in volunteer organizations, in virtually all arenas of policy-making in the country.... They have coalesced into small groups in every town and institution." ^[5]

It's true. Behind the familiar structure of our communities, new rules and systems are paving the way for a transformation few Americans dare even consider. Respected futurists Alvin and Heidi Toffler summarized it well in their 1994 book, Creating a New Civilization, which includes a foreword by Newt Gingrich. They wrote,

"A new civilization is emerging in our lives, and blind men everywhere are trying to suppress it. This new civilization brings with it new family styles, changed ways of working, loving, and living, a new economy, new political conflicts, and beyond all this an altered consciousness as well." ^[6]

The Tofflers were echoing UNESCO' plans. “The challenge to humanity," declared its its 1992 Commission on Culture and Development, "is to adopt new ways of thinking, new ways of acting, new ways of organizing itself in society, in short, new ways of living." ^[7]

The “new ways of thinking” call for “lifelong learning” in politically correct ideology, continual assessments to monitor attitudes, mandatory remediation for dissenters, and non-stop participation in "dialogue" through consensus groups. It's all part of building the global village of peace, unity and social control.

How will the public be persuaded to trade constitutional freedoms for an intrusive management system? The mainstream media is a major player in this revolution. Other key strategies were planned long ago. In Brave New World (1932), Aldous Huxley – brother of the first UNESCO leader, Julian Huxley – suggested that future rulers encourage sexual freedom. “It will help to reconcile [their] subjects to the servitude which is their fate.”

Huxley didn’t know God nor consider His sovereign hand in world affairs. We do! Long ago, He warned us, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” (Hosea 4:6) Having ignored His Word, Israel became blind to reality. But we have both His Word and the facts needed to take our stand, follow His directions, fight the battle by faith, and seek His gracious victory together.
