DISNEY BOYCOTT

SBC renews call for Disney boycott effort

AFA Journal, August 2001 Edition

Baptists in the “Big Easy” said they were not going to go easy on The Walt Disney Company. At its annual June gathering, held this year in New Orleans, the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) made it clear that it was still committed to the boycott of the Mouse House.

AFA called for a boycott of Disney in 1996 after continued efforts failed to persuade the company to return to its family-friendly roots. AFA took issue with Disney’s continued promotion of the homosexual agenda through its corporate policies granting health benefits to the domestic partners of its homosexual employees; in television programs on the Disney-owned ABC network; through books published by its Hyperion publishing house; and its hosting of a huge “Gay Days” celebration at Walt Disney World in Orlando each year. AFA also publicized the often raunchy films being released by the Disney subsidiary Miramax.
The SBC gave the boycott a big boost in 1997 when it officially called upon its almost 16 million members to cease doing business with Disney. The SBC is the largest Protestant denomination in the U.S.

At its gathering in New Orleans, the SBC passed a resolution which said, “The Disney Company has not only ignored our concerns, but flagrantly furthered this moral digression in its products and policies.”

Furthermore, the resolution laid out four requirements for Disney that, if met, would end the SBC participation in the boycott. According to an article in Baptist Press, those four requirements were: cease promotion of “Gay Days” at its theme parks; halt the publication of pro-homosexual books; refrain from advocating the “radical homosexual agenda” through its television and film outlets; and “establish an advisory committee of Southern Baptists and other evangelicals,” which would allow Disney to draw on the “advice and counsel” of conservative Christians in producing the company’s programs and movies.

“We applaud the Southern Baptist Convention’s renewed commitment to the Disney boycott,” said AFA President Donald Wildmon. “The homosexual movement is making huge gains in this country, in part because people of faith are often unwilling to personally sacrifice in order to let their voice be heard. That can’t be said about the SBC.”

SBC requirements to end disney boycott
  1. Cease promotion of “Gay Days” at its theme parks.
  2. Halt the publication of pro-homosexual books.
  3. Refrain from advocating the “radical homosexual agenda” through its television and film outlets.
  4. “Establish an advisory committee of Southern Baptists and other evangelicals,” which would allow Disney to draw on the “advice and counsel” of conservative Christians in producing the company’s programs and movies.

SBC leader says boycott still needed
Dr. Richard Land (left), President of the SBC’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, was instrumental in the decision of his denomination in 1997 to join AFA’s boycott of The Walt Disney Company. In a recent interview with AFA Journal, he addressed the boycott and the SBC’s recent actions.

On SBC and the Disney boycott…
“The Southern Baptist Convention continues to be very upset with the general trend of the Disney corporation…. So we wanted to make it clear that we continue to practice the boycott; we believe the boycott is hurting them.”

On Disney’s support of homosexual agenda…
“Disney continues to be known in the industry as one of the most homosexual-friendly places in the entirety of the entertainment world.”

“There’s a reason why the homosexuals have targeted Disney. There’s a reason why the homosexuals have targeted the Boy Scouts. Because these are powerful symbols and icons of normality and the family in American culture. And Disney, unlike the Boy Scouts, has been subverted and has been commandeered into being a proponent of the homosexual lifestyle, whereas the Boy Scouts have resisted this and maintained their…foundation of values.”
