Movie Gallery Refuses to Remove Porn
Number Three Video Chain Rebuffs Request
AFA Journal, January 2001 Edition
Movie Gallery, the third largest video retailer in the country behind Blockbuster and Hollywood Entertainment, has once again refused the request of AFA and other pro-family groups that it no longer rent or sell hard-core pornographic videos.
The company, headquartered in Dothan, Alabama, has over 960 stores in 31 states, and distributes porn from back rooms in over 200 of those video outlets. Movie Gallery stores are usually located in secondary markets.
AFA Special Projects Director Randy Sharp said, "Many people in these small towns would be shocked to learn what is available for rent at many Movie Gallery outlets. The hard-core porn available at these video stores includes explicit homosexual activities, explicit male-female sex, orgies--you name it, they've got it."
While Sharp has met on several occasions with Movie Gallery executives, the meetings have been fruitless.
A company spokesman for the video outlet told Sharp, "Movie Gallery's position is and will remain to be that we can't allow any organization, or person, or handful of people, to censor the product lines that we carry."
A 12-state alliance consisting of state directors for AFA, Christian Coalition, Family Policy Network, Kids Hurt Too, and Florida Family Association say they will undertake a grassroots effort to convince Movie Gallery to change its policy.
