PORNOGRAPHY
General Motors, AT&T Grabbing Pornography Cash
AFA Journal, January 2001 Edition
A stunning New York Times article revealed that major mainstream U.S. corporations like General Motors and AT&T have now jumped enthusiastically into the pornography business.
"This is like learning that your neighbor and best friend was arrested for indecent exposure. We're shocked and disappointed in two companies that are household names, and supposed to be upstanding citizens in our culture," said Donald E. Wildmon, AFA President and founder.
The article said mainstream companies--also including Time Warner, Marriott International, Hilton, and the News Corporation--are taking advantage of the growing popularity of porn, stating, for example, that General Motors annually sells more graphic sex films than infamous Hustler magazine producer Larry Flynt. That shocking fact is the result of General Motor's ownership of DirecTV, which sells almost $200 million of porn each year through pay-per-view.
AT&T raised more than a few eyebrows when it purchased the hard-core Hot Network for its broadband cable service, and the Times' article also said AT&T owns a company that offers "adult" movies to nearly one million hotel rooms.
"Porn is a blight on our society, and endangers the health of marriages and families, and threatens the safety of women and children," Wildmon said. "GM and AT&T might just as well be selling heroin on the street corner and thumping their chests because it's profitable. These companies are helping to corrupt our culture, and hastening God's judgment on our nation."
