Of Heroes and Holiness By Randall Murphree Editor
AFA Journal, July, 2002 edition
I have always loved patriotic holidays. Our nation’s flag blowing in the breeze has always moved me. With each passing year, I grow more grateful for the freedoms we’re blessed with in the good ol’ USA.
As we observe Independence Day, I urge you to celebrate the heroes who secured our freedoms through history, and remember those who have given their lives even during this past year that we might continue to live in freedom.
It is a gift we must not take for granted that our nation was founded and our republic forged on Christian principles. History is filled with references to our founding fathers’ faith. From the first moments of our national history, God was acknowledged. On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence said it clearly: “For the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of the Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.”
In the1892 Church of the Holy Trinity v. United States decision, the U.S. Supreme Court stated, “Our laws and institutions must necessarily be based upon and embody the teachings of The Redeemer of mankind.”
For almost 200 years our government acknowledged its godly beginnings. Unfortunately, in the late 1900s, we experienced a rapid shift in national focus. We turned away from God as our foundation, to tout man as his own savior. In large degree, we have expelled God from school and voted Him out of government.
Salute the flag, remember our heroes and work to restore our godly heritage. Live holy lives, worship God and serve others; be salt and light in our culture.
