Harry Potter hoax making Internet rounds

Christians appear to be falling for an E-mail hoax about the Harry Potter children’s book series.

AFA Journal, July 2001 Edition

Christians appear to be falling for an E-mail hoax about the Harry Potter children’s book series.

The hoax has as its source a satirical website called The Onion, well-known for its funny, inventive satire, as well as its vulgar and blasphemous stories.

In a story entitled, “Harry Potter books spark rise in Satanism among children,” the satire looked at the controversy over the book series’ focus on witchcraft. It contains a number of blasphemous comments about Jesus, Christianity, and the Bible, and makes the claim that the statements come from children who read and are being influenced by Harry Potter.

Also included in the story is a fictional interview with Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, who supposedly insults Jesus Christ while happily endorsing Satanism.
None of these stories are true.

The hoax also falsely claims AFA has been sending out an E-mail which warns Christians about the comments.
