 CULTURE Shining God’s light in a pagan culture It was a mixed bag of results for Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA). The announcement by the 98-year-old organization that it would forbid local affiliates to “discriminate” against homosexual mentors for children sent shockwaves through churches and pro-family groups. For the rest of the culture, however, it was barely even a blip on the screen of important and relevant issues.
|  | ACTIVIST PROFILE Radical for life It was November, 1978, nearly six years after the legalization of abortion via the landmark Roe vs. Wade decision in January, 1973.
In Fort Wayne, Indiana, 19-year-old Bryan J. (B.J.) Brown had just rededicated his life to Christ and was searching for God’s will for his life. Despite being raised in an evangelical home by loving parents, B.J. had been “pretty wild during high school and had gotten away from the Lord.” However, the Holy Spirit had convicted B.J. of his need for a genuine, lasting relationship, and he had surrendered to His call.
Shortly after this life-change, a friend said to B.J., “If you’re a Christian, then you must be pro-life.”
 TELEVISION Family Friendly Awards shock family group ABC’s My Wife and Kids took the Family Friendly Programming Forum’s award for best family comedy in the advertisers’ August 9 awards gala televised on ABC. The Guardian (CBS) took top honors in best new series. WB’s 7th Heaven was top drama, The Rosa Parks Story (CBS) top movie, Dinotopia (ABC) top animated special, and American Family (PBS) best special series.
“I have to say, we’re a little surprised at some of the winners,” said Tim Wildmon, president of American Family Association, which monitors prime-time programs for content. “For example, the winning sitcom is noted for its crude, suggestive language and very adult themes.”
