CHURCH IN AMERICA
America's Christian Heritage Week gives opportunity for thanks
AFA Journal, September 2001 Edition
Since 1992, Americans in towns, cities and states across the country have observed America's Christian Heritage Week (ACHW). This year November 18-24 (Thanksgiving week) has been set aside for citizens to honor God for His omnipotent grace in guiding America's founding fathers to establish this great nation.
"America's heritage is a Christian heritage," says AFA President Don Wildmon, "and we should all get down on our knees during this special week of observance and thank God for the men and women who risked their lives and fortunes long ago so that future generations could live in a country that is free.
"And today, in a time when our religious freedoms are being torn from our very hearts and hands, it is imperative that we educate the young, and remind those who may have forgotten, about our special heritage. As Christians, we have a mandate to stand boldly against those who are working to take away any reference to God and our country's Christian heritage."
Bruce Barilla of White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, has been working since the early '90s to help caring citizens and organizations across the land establish an America's Christian Heritage Week. Barilla recommends that whenever possible, the week of Thanksgiving be set aside, but some cities and states choose a different week during the year.
Barilla provides a myriad of resource materials to teach people how to work with their city and/or state officials in establishing an ACHW. He also provides information on getting proclamations written and authorized, as well as providing publicity ideas for promoting this special week.
