The Internet chat rooms are abuzz with the name Jeffrey Bezos, Time magazine’s choice for “Man of the Year” for 1999. But those posting on-line opinions lean heavily toward the nuance that Time has erred in its decision. The American Family Association agrees, but for differing reasons.
UNDERSTANDING LOVED BOYS AND BOYLOVERS Books exploring father/daughter incest and sex with animals are not
enough for Amazon.com. The world's largest on-line bookseller now offers a book which promotes the repulsive act of men having sex with young boys.
"UNDERSTANDING LOVED BOYS AND BOYLOVERS" attempts to portray men who prey
on young boys as 'sincere, concerned, loving human beings who simply have a
sexual orientation that is neither understood nor accepted by most
others.'
"They can call themselves anything they want, but the truth of the
matter is that they are child molesters, pure and simple," said AFA
Vice-President Tim Wildmon. "Anyone who uses children to gratify himself or herself
sexually is socially and spiritually perverted. For Amazon.com >to sell a
book justifying such actions is repulsive and irresponsible."
Jeffrey Bezos, chairman and founder of Amazon.com, is not a stranger to
controversial books being sold by his company. Last year, protests from
concerned consumers prompted Amazon.com to pull another pedophilia book,
"Varieties of Man-Boy Love". According to Wildmon, Amazon.com posted
three pro-child sex reviews of that book, reviews that say laws protecting
children from sexual predators are outdated and that "boylove" deserves a
place in society.
| Amazon.com and Chairman Jeffrey Bezos refused AFA’s request to discontinue selling books that promote adult-child sex and human-animal sex relations. “Amazon.com staunchly defended the sale of self-help and instruction manuals for incest, pedophilia and bestiality,” said Tim Wildmon, AFA Vice-President. “The most defenseless of God’s creations, children, are fair game under Bezos’ corporate philosophy. It is sad that Time magazine chose to honor a man who leads a company with no moral compass."
When questioned about selling books describing bestiality and father-daughter incest in detail, Carl Gish, Amazon.com General Manager and spokesman for Bezos defended the practice, “Our mission isn’t to be a censor. It is to provide selection.” Gish added “...those books are out there and there are people who think like that out there, and it’s their prerogative.”
In November, AFA contacted Amazon.com after learning that it offered The Horseman: Obsessions of a Zoophile (a person who has sex with animals) and Dearest Pet: On Bestiality. Online reviews hailed Dearest Pet as a step-by-step manual with “wonderful and diverse color illustrations of zoophilia.
Yet, Amazon.com held firm in its position regarding the sale of “training manuals” to child molesters and animal abusers. When asked if it’s OK to make a dollar bill selling these types of books, Emily Glassman, Amazon.com Public Relations Manager simply stated, “It’s a question of selection.”
AFA says these types of materials are bad business for any company and that the “question of selection” applies to consumers of on-line bookstores too. “Americans have no tolerance for sexual perversion and child abuse, or for those who advocate it,” said Wildmon.
For the sake of our children, please contact Amazon.com and politely urge them to cease selling books which clearly promote sex between adults and children as well as sex between people and animals.
