There is a very real possibility of a potential Supreme Court vacancy coming up in the near future. The Court will likely have to decide the life and death issue of partial-birth abortion yet again. The Court may also be forced to rule on the constitutionality of homosexual marriages in near future. In short, every issue you and I care about eventually ends up before the United States Supreme Court.

Considering that appointments to the Supreme Court are lifetime positions, the legacy President Bush leaves America could well be determined by the men and women he appoints to the high court. They will serve well beyond his eight years in the White House. That's why the selection of a Supreme Court nominee is so important. In fact, I believe it is one of the most important decisions any president must make. In the case of this President, it is even more important because so many pivotal issues have been decided by 5-to-4 rulings.

For example, when the Court ruled that the Boy Scouts of America did not have to hire homosexuals as scoutmasters, that was a 5-to-4 ruling. When the Court struck down state laws banning partial-birth abortion, that was a 5-to-4 ruling. The decision to uphold Cleveland, Ohio's school voucher program was a 5-to-4 ruling. The Supreme Court decision that stopped the 2000 Florida recount, which might have put Al Gore in the White House, was also a 5-to-4 ruling.
