Today, America debates about whether the Democrats or Republicans are best suited to lead the country. While the Democrats present themselves as the party of hope, progressivism, and inclusiveness their policy results have been crippling for this country. While in theory and on paper liberal policies look good, in reality they’ve caused the destruction of some of the greatest cities in America’s history.
San Francisco, California
This city has been run by Democrats since 1964. Prostitution, illegal immigration and high taxes are all flourishing in San Francisco.
In December of 2003, under a Democrat mayor, the city loosened its massage license requirements and made prostitution non-criminal. This is problematic considering the city already struggled with prostitution among massage parlors. Under the previous ID law it prevented sex offenders and pedophiles from becoming licensed massage therapists. This is not the case anymore. Previously, massage therapists could be charged with a misdemeanor and lose their license. Now there are simply fined and able to keep their license. Essentially, the city has legalized prostitution.
On July 1, 2015 a five-time deported and seven-time convicted felon killed Kate Steinle. Kate was an innocent young lady taking a stroll with her family at a local pier when she was shot by the illegal. The killer was walking the streets because local officials refused to allow federal officials to deport him a sixth time choosing instead to keep him roaming freely about the streets of San Francisco. The city proudly disregards federal immigration laws.
Just last month the city of San Francisco put forth what’s being called a “Tech Tax.” According to Forbes.com, “The city is now considering a proposal that would require these technology companies to pay a 1.5% payroll tax, the revenue from which would be used to combat the city’s growing homeless problem.” Borrowing the Democrats language, the local elite companies are being asked to pay “their fair share.” All of the sudden the elites are against higher taxes, for them that is.
Uber investor Jason Calacanis said on CNN that “San Francisco is an amazing city run by incompetent people, who not only can’t solve basic problems like crime, homelessness, housing and transportation–they are making these problems worse.”
Detroit, Michigan
Since 1962 Detroit, Michigan has been run by Democrat mayors. According to CBS News, Detroit is the poorest city in the United States with 48% of the population making under $25,000 annually.
Unions (heavily invested by the Democratic Party) began to cripple the once booming Detroit auto industry. According to John Hawkins of townhall.com, “The unions forced the companies to pay out more than market value for their workers, put stifling work rules in place that made flexibility and innovation difficult, and created generous pension plans that are proving to be unsustainable.”
People have been fleeing Detroit the last six decades due to liberal policies. Detroit was America’s fourth-largest city in the 1950s with 1.8 million people. In 2010 the city’s population had dropped to an astonishing 702,000.
According to the Washington Examiner in 2013, “Former mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, a Democrat, was convicted in March on 24 federal felony offenses, including mail fraud, wire fraud, tax evasion, racketeering and extortion. Prosecutors said he doled out jobs to friends and family, wasted city tax dollars on fraudulent contracts and pocketed more than $1 million in illegal kickbacks.”
Also in this Washington Examiner article the author points out that “the average response time for an emergency call was 58 minutes…” and “there are 78,000 abandoned buildings in Detroit.”
All of this is the result of Democratic policies over last six decades.
Chicago, Illinois
Chicago has been under Democrat control for a staggering 85 years. With the strictest gun control, the city is one of the deadliest in America. According to the New York Times, in 2012 there were over 500 murders. The city even tried to ban owning handguns until the Supreme Court struck that down. Gun stores are outlawed in Chicago. Democrats continue to crow about the need for more gun control after mass shootings but what they don’t realize is that the only people suffering from gun control are the law-abiding citizens. Criminals have their guns.
IllinoisPolicy.org issued a report in 2013 that found in Chicago “Seventy-five percent of students at the lowest-performing elementary schools failed to meet standards on state exams.” The report also noted “Students at Chicago’s lowest-performing high schools drop out at nearly 12 times the rate of average Illinois students – 36 percent compared to 3 percent, respectively.” The city’s public schools are failing because Chicago pumps endless money into education expecting to fix the problem when in reality it only makes things worse.
In September of 2012 the Chicago Teachers Union (Democrats support unions) walked out on 400,000 students and 675 schools all over teacher salaries. The union prevailed and forced the city to spend more money that it didn’t have to pay teachers.
A Chicago citizen living under Democrat policies is likely to either be killed by gangs or flunk out of school.
Democrat run cities in America are a prime example of why their liberal ideas have been tested and are proven failures. Crime, poverty and failure haunts these cities, so why would we want a nation run by such a party?
