Do all Black Lives Matter?
Black lives matter, a short statement with powerful implications. All across our country people are outraged at the loss of black life in America. People are chanting, “I can’t breathe,” Eric Garner’s last words before he died during an arrest in New York. People are also chanting, “Hands up don’t shoot,” a phrase associated with the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson. Demonstrations continue to grow with no signs of slowing down. Many people in many places are calling for justice.
This Sunday millions of churchgoers under the leadership of their pastors and bishops will wear black and pray for the black men in their community. The aim is to draw attention to the number of black men who have lost their lives at the hands of law enforcement. Church members will use the hashtag #blacklivesmatter. I can’t help but wonder just how many churches will take part in this demonstration. I also can’t help but wonder what makes Eric Garner or Michael Brown’s life more valuable than the millions of black babies that have been aborted in our country.
Please understand what I’m saying. Where there is injustice we should be concerned. Caring Americans should speak out. So when will black churches speak out on behalf of the aborted? Consider this, on average in the United States 1,876 black babies are aborted every day, EVERY DAY. Since 1973 Black women have had roughly 16 million abortions. More than 40% of Black pregnancies end in abortion. How many black men have we lost at the hands of a white abortionist? Who will march for them? Why are we silent?
Sanctity of Human Life Month is in January. I wonder how many black churches will unite around the cause to end the murder of black men in the womb. Can we all wear red? Black? Or maybe white to acknowledge the destruction of innocence? It’s true, black lives do matter even those in their mother’s womb. While nationally people proclaim, “I can’t breathe” let’s remember all the precious babies who never have and never will breathe. #blacklivesmatter
