When I was in elementary school I told my mother that I wanted to start an orphanage. For some reason I had associated a couple who had several children with an orphanage. So, what I really meant was that I would like a full quiver, as Psalm 127 says. God places different desires in every believer’s heart and one of my desires was to grow up, have a wife, and raise a house full of kids.
My wife and I just celebrated our first wedding anniversary along with finding out that we’re expecting our first child. Hearing about others who are expecting and anticipating a child of your own are two different scenarios. Expecting a child of your own is much more personal and exciting.
My wife and I are anxiously awaiting the arrival of baby Wildmon, due in late June of 2017.
Soon after this news, I accompanied my wife to have her first ultrasound. At just 10 weeks old we could see our child’s heartbeat and at times the baby would squirm around. This was a beautiful and memorable time for us.
After leaving the clinic, my wife looked at me and said “how can someone end the life of what is clearly a human being?” I had a hard time coming up with a clear explanation. Psalm 51:5 tells us that man is sinful from birth. In John 10:10-11 Jesus says “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” No matter the complexity behind the decision to have an abortion, the action itself is surely of Satan.
Last week I learned that the Governor John Kasich of Ohio, signed a law banning abortion after twenty weeks. This was great news and I applaud him for doing this. I also found out that on the same day Governor Kasich vetoed a bill called the “heartbeat bill.” If passed, this law would’ve outlawed abortion if a heartbeat was detected. While the twenty week ban is a good law, the “heartbeat bill” would’ve been a much stauncher protection for unborn children.
According to the Washington Post, “Kasich said he vetoed what has been called the ‘heartbeat bill’ because it was ‘clearly contrary’ to Supreme Court rulings. The state would have been forced to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars trying unsuccessfully to defend the law and would have provoked lawsuits that would end up rolling back other restrictions enacted by the state, he said.”
If every governor or legislature rationalizes as Governor Kasich, then Roe vs. Wade will never be overturned. If Mr. Kasich believes that a child with a beating heart should not be aborted then he should be willing to spend every penny at his disposal to make sure this law is upheld at every level of the judiciary.
With all due respect, governor Kasich is displaying a defeatist and shallow form of thinking. He is assuming that this law is defeated without even allowing it to see the light of day. Mr. Kasich is also basing his veto decision on court precedent. For some this seems wise, but what the governor is failing to consider is that new precedent can be formed. Meaning that all it takes is one court ruling to create new precedent that would eventually undermine Roe vs. Wade. Hypothetically, if this were to become law, by the time the court challenge made its way up to the Supreme Court, we could have two new justices that are staunchly pro-life. This means that it would be possible to have a 5-4 or even 6-3 ruling in favor of the heartbeat law, which would effectively undo Roe vs. Wade sending all abortion related law back to the states.
Let us thank God that we have the possibility to see one of the most brutal practices in this country ended in most states in our lifetime and ask Him to provide us with warriors of the faith who will be unafraid to fight the enemy on behalf of “these little ones.”
