When Christians went to the polls on November 8, 2016, we knew the future of the Supreme Court for a generation was at stake. President Trump made a campaign promise to us that he would only appoint judges to the federal court that would rule according to the Constitution and not make up law based on their personal feelings.
On November 11, 2016, I sent a letter to President Trump in which I said, "We would like the Trump Administration to strongly advocate for prolife judges who will protect the life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness for all human beings both born and unborn."
President Trump nominated Judge Neil Gorsuch for Supreme Court justice on January 31, 2017, and by all accounts, he will be an outstanding justice. Now President Trump has an opportunity to appoint his second justice to fill the seat of retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy.
Last week I sent a letter to President Trump stating, "we prayerfully, strongly, and humbly implore you to select the nominee with a demonstrably constitutional judicial philosophy and a verifiably strong will against political pressure. Moreover, we encourage you to reject any nominee who is merely 'good,' but to nominate only the best." President Trump has narrowed his list of potential nominees to five and has said he will announce the nomination by July 9.
The American Family Association is backing Judge Amy Coney Barrett, a U.S. Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Judge Barrett also clerked for the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. We believe Judge Barrett is the best nominee for several reasons which we referenced in our letter of support to President Trump, and we are confident that AFA's voice is being heard at the White House.
