In a decision with potentially huge ramifications for religious liberty, Attorney General Jeff Sessions has directed the Department of Justice to side with a Christian baker in a case that will soon be heard by the Supreme Court.

Jack Phillips, owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop, has seen his First Amendment rights trampled by the legal system since 2012. This happened because he politely declined to bake a "wedding" cake for a homosexual couple at a time when same-sex marriage was not even legal in Colorado.

His case has been accepted on appeal by the Supreme Court, and under AG Sessions' leadership, the DOJ filed a friend of the court brief on Phillips' behalf. With the addition of Neil Gorsuch to the bench, this case has the potential to reverse decades of repressive court rulings that have been hostile to Christian faith.

Sessions' DOJ has correctly observed that requiring Phillips to use his creative talent to bake a cake for a homosexual ceremony forces him to violate his sincerely held religious beliefs about marriage and "invades his First Amendment rights."
