According to statistics reported by the Guttmacher Institute, one out of three women in our nation will experience an abortion by age 45. Those disturbing stats are even higher among women who had abortions in past years and decades. Previously reported numbers were as high as 45%. Did you know this statistic? Are you surprised? I was one of these women – utterly convinced that this dark secret must forever remain buried – a deep grave that would not be uncovered in this lifetime.
I tried to pretend it didn't happen. But reminders would come, and forgetting was an impossible feat. The subject would come up at the most unexpected times – at a child’s birthday party, a mother was suddenly blurting out, “I don’t understand how anyone could ever have an abortion!” The shame, guilt, anger, and hatred for what I had done were inescapable.
Abortion is no light or cheerful subject. Ephesians 5:13 says, “It is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret.” But let’s not stop there. Good news is found in the next verse, “All things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light.”
If you have been living in denial or shame and guilt, it is time to do exactly what verse 15 says, “Awake and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” You can go beyond hoping or even knowing that you are forgiven. You can both forgive those who played a part in your abortion, and you can receive that long-awaited forgiveness for yourself – what an immeasurable gift! In 1 John, chapter 1, we are told that if we “confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
God has not forgotten you and neither has American Family Radio. I received a phone call from a young lady who heard a promo on AFR urging her to surrender her past secret of abortion. As a result, she requested a local contact who could lead her through a post-abortion Bible study. That contact happened to be me. This brave young lady has now started an eight-week intensive study and is well on her way to being free indeed.
