Redeeming the Time

Christians in America are again at a pivotal moment.

With President Donald Trump’s second administration just beginning, the cultural and political landscape is ripe with challenges and opportunities. How should Christians engaged in the public square navigate this moment?

My pastor began 2024 with the apostle Paul’s exhortation in Ephesians 5:16, a verse that also provides a timely purpose for 2025 and beyond: “Making the most of your time, because the days are evil.” Some translations use the expression “redeeming the time,” which means to live wisely and purposefully, making the most of every opportunity for God’s glory. This call includes Christians in every sphere of life, including the political realm. Here are three priorities for Christians committed to political engagement.

1. Renewing our commitment to the sanctity of life

At the heart of Christian political engagement is the belief that every human being is created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). The sanctity of life is foundational, and as

we enter this new chapter, it remains a critical issue. The pro-life movement has achieved significant victories in recent years, including the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022. However, the work is far from over.

In the wake of that historic decision, the debate over abortion has mostly shifted to the states, where a patchwork of laws now determines the fate of the unborn. This year, Christians must double down on efforts and messaging to advocate for policies that protect life at every stage, from conception to natural death. This includes not only opposing abortion but also supporting initiatives that provide resources for expectant mothers, adoption agencies, and families in need.

The incoming Trump administration has pledged to prioritize pro-life policies, and we must hold them accountable to that promise. But our role is not merely to pressure politicians; it is to lead by example. Churches and Christian organizations must step into the gap, offering practical support to women facing unplanned pregnancies as well as advocating for a culture that values life.

2. Strengthening the traditional family

The family is the cornerstone of society and a reflection of God’s design, yet it is under relentless attack in today’s culture. From the redefinition of marriage to the erosion of parental rights, the challenges are immense. In 2025, we Christians must prioritize strengthening the traditional family.

This begins with recognizing that the family is not just a cultural institution but a divine mandate. Marriage between one man and one woman, as ordained by God, provides the foundation for raising children and nurturing the next generation. Policies that promote and protect this vision of the family should be at the forefront of our political efforts. We must not yield to a redefinition of family or parentage, but we must stand firm for the natural family created by God.

The Trump administration’s support for traditional family values offers a platform for advancing this agenda. However, political action alone will not suffice. Churches must equip families to thrive in a hostile culture, offering discipleship programs, marriage counseling, and resources for parents. At the same time, Christian leaders should speak boldly about the biblical vision for family, countering the lies of a culture that seeks to redefine and marginalize it.

3. Cultivating a spirit of hope and renewal

In the midst of political division and cultural decay, it is easy to become disheartened. However, as followers of Christ, we are called to be people of hope. The challenges we face are real, but they are not insurmountable. In 2025, Christians must embrace a spirit of renewal, trusting that God is at work even in the darkest times. One of my last radio broadcasts of 2024 featured Pastor Jack Hibbs and his message calling Christians to understand the urgency of this moment. His admonition could not be more timely.

The Trump administration’s return to the White House brings a renewed and urgent opportunity for Christians to influence the direction of the nation. While we may not agree with every policy or decision, we can champion areas of alignment and advocate to ensure that biblical principles are upheld. At the same time, we must resist the temptation to place our ultimate hope in any political leader or party. Our trust is in the Lord, Who reigns sovereign over all.

As the old hymn says, “Here I raise mine Ebenezer; Hither by Thy help I’m come.” To raise an Ebenezer is to create a memorial – a stone of remembrance – as described in 1 Samuel 7:12. Samuel set up a stone as a standard to commemorate God’s assistance in the  Israelites’ victory in battle, a declaration of gratitude for past blessings, and a reminder of hope. This hope isn’t just a wish but an expectation of God’s ongoing, faithful support.

Thus, our hope for 2025 is not just a wishful New Year’s resolution, but requires a forward-looking vision firmly fixed in a confidence that God has faithfully helped us this far. Christians must be proactive, seeking innovative solutions to the problems facing our nation. Whether it is addressing poverty, reforming education, or promoting religious freedom, we must approach these issues with creativity and a commitment to biblical justice. By doing so, we can offer a compelling alternative to the cynicism and despair that often characterize political discourse.

As we step into 2025, the days are indeed evil. Yet, this is precisely why Paul’s call to “redeem the time” is so urgent. Christians have been entrusted with the gospel of Jesus Christ, which is the ultimate solution to the world’s problems. Our political engagement is not an end in itself, but it is a means of pointing people to the hope we have in Christ.

The new year offers a fresh opportunity to make a difference – for our nation, our communities, and the kingdom of God. By prioritizing the sanctity of life, strengthening the family, and cultivating hope through a fixed standard of confidence in God’s faithfulness, we can redeem the time and shine as lights in the darkness. Let us rise to the occasion, trusting that God will use our efforts for His glory and the good of His people. Make the most of every opportunity this year.

Practical steps for engagement

As we consider these priorities, the question remains: What does this engagement look like in practice? Here are a few practical steps for Christians engaged in politics this year:

  • Pray for our leaders: Scripture commands us to pray for those in authority (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Commit to regularly praying for President Trump, his administration, and all elected officials, asking God to grant them wisdom and courage.
  • Engage locally: While national politics often dominate the headlines, much of the most important work happens at the local level. Get involved in your community, whether by attending school board meetings, volunteering for a local campaign, or supporting a crisis pregnancy center.
  • Speak truth in love: In a polarized society, it is easy to fall into the trap of anger and hostility. Instead, follow Paul’s admonition in Ephesians 4:15 to “speak the truth in love,” engaging in conversations with grace and humility.
  • Disciple the next generation: Equip young Christians to understand and articulate a biblical worldview. Encourage them to pursue careers in public service, law, and education, where they can make a lasting impact for the kingdom.
  • Stay grounded in Scripture: Finally, anchor your political engagement in the Word of God. Let Scripture shape your priorities, guide your decisions, and sustain your hope.
