One Million Moms has received numerous complaints regarding Jimmy John’s new “Spicy Summer Read” ad campaign, which introduces The Blade and the Brine, the company’s steamy romance novel. Jimmy John’s description of the book in its YouTube commercial states, “Things are heating up at Jimmy John’s with our ‘Summer Menu of Ultimate Temptation.’ …Order any of our tantalizing wraps and sandwiches in the app with promo code BEACHREAD, and you’ll get a titillating, ‘romantasy’ audiobook.”
Viewers of Jimmy John’s ”Spicy Summer Read” campaign immediately understand the intended implications of the commercials’ extremely suggestive wording, paired with rose petals and slowly dripping ranch sauce – all depicted in efforts to advertise sandwiches. Potential customers may also find Jimmy John’s ad tagline, “Summer Menu of Ultimate Temptation,” offensive.
Despite Jimmy John’s intentional use of sensual implications, this type of advertising is entirely unnecessary. Jimmy John’s has deliberately chosen to produce advertisements that are controversial rather than wholesome. One Million Moms finds this highly inappropriate.
Jimmy John’s executives must not care what children hear, despite the damaging and destructive impact of such ads on children who view them. Everyone knows kids repeat what they hear. This ad demonstrates weak marketing, and Jimmy John’s should have the corporate responsibility not to use an age-old euphemism that offends families.
Let Jimmy John’s know that, as a parent and a consumer, you are disgusted by the company’s recent irresponsible marketing choices.
Vulgar and offensive advertising is never appropriate. Jimmy John’s needs to know that parents disapprove!
If you agree that Jimmy John’s marketing campaign is inappropriate, please sign our petition urging the company to cancel its spicy book commercial immediately. Don’t forget to share this information with your family and friends!
