The Tragic Idol of Abortion

As the nation stands with its eyes riveted on the Kavanaugh hearings, we are seeing spiritual warfare at its height.  We have been and are continuing to see an epic spiritual battle being fought right in front of us.  Light and darkness are engaged in what seems a fight to the finish “in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6:12).

Why is this particular battle so intense?   What is it that would lead the two sides to be so passionately opposed to each other?   A major cause of this epic conflict is the stand for life and against abortion.

Many people believe that Judge Kavanagh will help end legalized abortion once he is on the Supreme Court.   That his could be the swing vote that ends the sad reign of Roe v. Wade.  And for that reason, the other side wants to stop Judge Kavanaugh from being confirmed at all costs; to torpedo his confirmation no matter what it takes.

Why is legalized abortion so important to so many people?  Sadly, because so many people have made abortion an idol.  Many “worship” the golden calf of abortion and are willing to fight tooth and nail to keep it in place.  For a lot of people, abortion is a big money-making business.  For others, it’s an easy way out of a difficult circumstance.  Many people want to keep it in place so they can keep their “financial benefits” and/or to utilize it as a “convenient” tool to use whenever and however they “need” it. So, the support is significant to keep the idol of abortion legal.  Their perspective on abortion is “Don’t you dare even think about overturning Roe v. Wade!”

I believe that we, the church, should be diligent and passionate about faithfully doing at least two things in the midst of this spiritual battle.

  • Stand firmly on the truth of God’s Word trusting the Lord.
  • Diligently engage in spiritual combat daily by praying without ceasing.

Scripture makes it very clear where each believer should stand regarding abortion.  Exodus 20:13 says, “You shall not murder.”  This is a very clear and to the point and there is no doubt that murder is “the taking of innocent life.”

Too many in our culture, including persons in the church, are taking the word “murder” and substituting it with words like “abortion,” reproductive rights,” and “euthanasia.”  Apparently, they want to believe that murder is ok if you call it by one of these substitute names.  Yet whatever name you give the act of taking innocent life, it is still clearly wrong according to the Word of God.  Abortion is a sin.

Deuteronomy 30:19 says, “I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live…”

Now, of course, we serve a merciful and forgiving heavenly Father.  In 1 John 1:9, we find “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”  Without question, if we confess and repent of any sin, asking for forgiveness, He will forgive and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.  God is full of mercy and lovingkindness.

May we, the church of Jesus Christ, not rest until the idol of abortion is torn down and destroyed.
