But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the male children alive. So the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this thing, and saved the male children alive?” (Exodus 1:17-18)
Rulers who seem to think that murdering innocent babies for convenience’s sake, sadly, are not new.
Tragically, in the history of the world and recorded explicitly in the Word of God, there were those rulers who not only didn’t seem to mind murdering babies but did it possibly wondering why anyone might defy their desire to do so.
In the Word of God, two leaders, in particular, stand out as ruthless having little to no heart to pity babies in the womb.
Pharaoh, the mighty king of ancient Egypt, and Herod the king who reigned as the ruler of Judea in the days of Christ are just two examples.
Exodus 1:16-19 shares from Pharaoh’s story in the Old Testament:
Then the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of one was Shiphrah and the name of the other Puah; and he said, “When you do the duties of a midwife for the Hebrew women, and see them on the birthstools, if it is a son, then you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.” But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the male children alive. So the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this thing, and saved the male children alive?”
Herod took a similar action in Matthew 2:16 :
Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men.
They were two wicked, self-centered rulers who thought little of destroying innocent children for their own evil reasons and purposes.
One was seeking to slow down the population growth of a people he didn’t particularly like. And the other was seeking to destroy a baby who was the Messiah, the King of the universe.
And it appears that the collateral damage caused in the death of so many other babies in the pursuit of killing one child didn’t seem to matter – at least to Herod.
Accomplishing his goal of eliminating the Messiah, it appears, was what mattered to him.
When we consider the history of what these wicked leaders did for their own selfish, cruel reasons, it’s not hard to find reasons to criticize them for their wickedness.
Yet sadly, in both recent history and even as we speak, we have tragically had rulers who seem to have the same wicked perspective on murdering innocent children.
Tragically we have a president in office who seems to be passionate about supporting the killing of innocent babies and seeing to it that it is freely allowed in our nation.
Our present president, it appears, places himself right alongside Pharoah in the book of Exodus and Herod in the Book of Matthew.
Once again, we see a leader that seems to have no compassion for babies in the womb.
Yet how tragic it is that many stand with him with the same or a similar passion to see abortion remain legal.
Sadly, many other leaders appear to agree with his perspective that babies, if unwanted, don’t count.
We as a nation need to do some serious heart and soul searching.
There are many, many people who support leaders who appear to have little compassion for babies in the womb.
So, ask yourself the question, “What is my perspective on this matter.?”
And if you feel that you can support a leader who thinks, acts, and supports abortion, where does that place you as a human being?
What does that say about your own character? What does that say about who you are siding with within the context of all of history?
Many will say, “Well, abortion is just one single issue – there are other issues just as important if not more important than this one issue!” One issue is not greater than the others.”
Like the slavery issue in the elections of the mid-1800s, the abortion issue towers above most of the other issues.
Every human being, whether in the womb or outside of the womb, is made in the image of God. (See Genesis 1:26.)
And every human being has incalculable worth as a person as each was created by God.
The Word of God tells us in one of the Ten Commandments “You shall not murder” (Exodus 20:13.) Also, in Deuteronomy 30:19, God tells us “Choose life, that both you and your descendants may live.” Where do you stand?
Our heavenly Father, the King of the universe, made every human being. No other king can or could do this.
God sees every human being as having tremendous value and worth and He has a plan and a purpose for every single one.
Why should any other much lesser king think that his attitude toward any human being should be any less?
The mind and perspective of the King of the universe, reflected extensively in the Word of God, should reign supreme for us all.
