Millions of What?

Over Thanksgiving, my husband and I took a once-in-a-lifetime trip out West to visit some national parks. One of our sightseeing adventures was at a park in Utah called Mt. Zion. The beauty out there is something I still can’t comprehend. Pictures, while beautiful, don’t give it justice.

Upon the park’s entry, there is a 1.1-mile-long tunnel that was built in the 1930s. And as impressive as this work of ingenuity is, what lies on the other side is even grander. The second your car leaves the tunnel, you are immersed in sights that feel like another world. With a mixture of canyons, flora, fauna, and streams prettier than anything I could fathom – the view is simply gorgeous.

Yet, as we explored this slice of creation, a few thoughts occurred.

  1. If this is only earth, how much prettier will heaven be?
  2. How do people see this and not believe there is a Creator?

Unfortunately, my moment with Jesus became a scientific debate as we arrived at the park’s visitor center. The official brown plaques within each exhibit explained how these parks took millions of years to form.

I shook my head.

“That isn’t scriptural,” I instinctively told my husband.

He agreed, and we continued our exploration of creation. But once we got home, I still couldn’t stop thinking about how these plaques rudely took the credit away from the Maker of the universe.

On Mt. Zion’s website, I found even more information explaining how the park came to be. It states,

“The rock layers found in Zion today were deposited between approximately 110 –270 million years ago –only in recent geologic time have they been uplifted and eroded to form the scenery of Zion National Park.”

At this point, you might be wondering why on earth I’m so worked up about a timeline. After all, that’s what they teach in school, right? That a big bang happened, and everything just occurred. Of course, that’s what they want you to believe! Not that a massive flood transpired and changed everything. No, that’s just for crazy Christians.

Except, that is the truth.

At Answers in Genesis (AiG), many Christian theologians, scientists, and historians have spent time researching and finding proof that the earth, in all of its splendor, is much younger than evolutionists would have us believe. And this is crucial.

In this AiG blog, Dr. Terry Mortenson sums it up quite well. He says,

"What is at stake here is the authority of Scripture, the character of God, the doctrine of death, and the very foundation of the gospel. If the early chapters of Genesis are not true literal history, then faith in the rest of the Bible is undermined, including its teaching about salvation and morality."

If the world can debunk Genesis 1:1, what would make anyone believe John 3:16, Revelation 22:21, or anything in between?

In Romans 1:20-22, Scripture explains how important creation is in showing individuals God’s magnitude and grace. It says that because of creation, people are without excuse when questioning His existence.

For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools.

So much about God has been revealed through His handiwork, including the effects of the flood. Next time you see or hear someone talk about millions of years … I hope you’ll think twice!

P.S. The picture attached to this blog is one that we took on a hike in Zion … I told you it was beautiful!
