Even after the Planned Parenthood videos on the destruction of human life for body parts, there remains a commitment to a culture of death among scientists, researchers, activists, and legislators. They argue that stem cell research using unborn, human body parts holds great promise to cure or treat health problems.
First, it is important to understand a distinction between adult stem cell research and embryonic stem cell research. Using adult stem cells does not take life while embryonic stem cell research dismembers and destroys an unborn human being.
So what exactly is a stem cell? A human stem cell is a basic type of cell that can turn into other types of cells. Stem cells can be found in either adults OR unborn embryos (a human being in early biological development).
Embryonic stem cell research kills the unborn embryo and then harvests the body parts or stem cells for research purposes. Research using embryonic stem cells has resulted in no successful treatments or cures, but it would still be unbiblical even if it did.
Adult stem cells are derived from human beings already born and do not require the destruction of human life. Sources of adult stem cells come from brain cells, bone marrow, pancreas, heart, placenta, and umbilical cord. Adult stem cell research has proven effective for treating several health conditions like: leukemia, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, rheumatoid arthritis, and breast cancer. Again, unlike embryonic stem cell research that destroys life, adult stem cell research causes no life-threatening harm.
The continued degradation of the value of human life has become a serious issue for our nation. The fact that embryonic stem cell research kills unborn human life is often intentionally left out of the debate. Secular media and other culture-of-death advocates frequently conceal this moral problem and use palliative words like hope, promise, and cures to describe stem cell research in general. They prey on an uninformed population.
Scientists and biotech corporations have been misleading the public for a long time on this issue. Especially since President Obama’s 2009 Executive Order allowing federal funds for embryonic stem cell research. Since then the U.S. taxpayer has been funding embryonic stem cell research.
History teaches us what happens when some humans are considered more valuable than others. Slavery in the U.S. was justified because Africans were considered less than human. Hitler placed Jews in the same type category. Now our President, the Democratic Party, and a growing number of Republicans (in the name of big-tent diversity) unashamedly support the destruction of human life. They, too, consider human embryos to be sub-human. This destructive ethic of human life based on functionality is the argument of many pro-abortion advocates.
They argue that there is a point in time after conception when human identity is equivalent to human functionality. It is at this point scientists and pro-abortionists say that human beings are worthy of legal protection. Prior to this point in human functionality, they say murdering babies is not immoral because they are not human. Of course this makes no sense because there never was a time a human being was not a human being. If you were not a human being then what were you?
The Bible states that human life is valuable (Gen. 1:27) and is why God said, “You shall not murder” (Exodus 20:13).
Many politicians love to say “God bless America.” Why would God bless America given these abominations? Are these words now cliché? Asking God to bless a nation that condones the taking of innocent life in the womb is akin to Belshazzar’s actions evoking the gods in Daniel 5. At the Babylonian king’s drunk fest, he mocked God by drinking from the golden cups stolen from the temple of Jerusalem. These cups were dedicated in the service of worshipping God. Drinking from these cups Belshazzar “praised the gods of gold and silver, of bronze, iron, wood and stone” (Daniel 5:4).
Just as God provided Nebuchadnezzar and his son, Belshazzar, time to humble themselves before Him, so is He allowing America time to humble herself. But why would God bless the Church in America when a vast majority of Christians remain silent on, or even condone baby murder in the name of ‘research’ and ‘choice’? Should not Christians stand as Daniel did and declare the handwriting on the wall to both America as a nation and to a wayward church? Yes.
Daniel recounted to Belshazzar the life of his father. Daniel said Nebuchadnezzar suffered the judgment of God “until he recognized that the Most High God is ruler over the realm of mankind and that He sets over it whomever He wishes” (Daniel 5:21).
God is longsuffering by allowing time for the church in America to humble herself and repent. If neither America nor the church repents, then God’s wrath will fall on both.
Martin Luther King Jr. said, “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” Today, it is not comfortable to be pro-life. Stand for truth. Declare it in your home, church, community, and to politicians and candidates, that God honors and values human life. Like Daniel, do not be afraid to present the truth. Declare abortion and embryonic stem cell research for what it is - murder.
