The tragic shooting in Orlando has been in the news for more than a week and, of course, rightfully so. A person full of darkness murdered 49 individuals mercilessly. It should be in the news. It should be on our minds and our hearts. It seems that we hear of mass shootings and before we have comprehended the magnitude and devastation of one, another has taken place. Human beings dying needlessly at the hands of hate-filled killers. Every shooting, whether it was on a school campus, in a public building, a nightclub, or even a church – has been tragic, saddening and disturbing.
Yet strangely we are relatively silent about one type of mass killing. This kind of mass killing, for some unusual reason, doesn’t stir the culture and our society like these mass shootings do. This type of mass killing is “different.” It’s not “the same.” In fact, this type of mass killing is considered so “unimportant” it doesn’t even make the news. Yet sadly, the numbers that have died at the hands of these mass killings far outweigh the numbers in the tragic shootings that make the news.
I am speaking of the mass murders called abortion. Tragically, the moment many read the word “abortion,” the reaction is “Oh, why are you even bringing up abortion? It’s a completely different matter. I am offended that you are even comparing the two issues at all.”
Yet the question must be asked: “Why? Why don’t we care about the babies? Why are they so unimportant to us and our society? Why do we ignore the huge numbers of children that have died by abortion?” Mass shootings are issues of discussion among the presidential candidates, and rightfully so. These acts of terrorism must be dealt with, directly and decisively. Yet those same candidates largely ignore the huge number of deaths by abortion.
In a December 2, 2013 USA Today article, it was stated that more than 900 people died in mass shootings in the U.S. over the last seven years. A New York Times article from September 24, 2014 stated that from December 2000 to 2013, 1,043 people in the U.S. were wounded or killed by active shooters attempting to kill people in a confined or populated area. Sadly, almost a thousand babies are murdered every day in this country at the hands of the terrorists performing abortions. Yet it doesn’t even make the news.
The Word of God clearly tells us “You shall not murder.” The proper translation means “You shall not take innocent life.” So this means whether people are in a public place, a work place, a night club, in a church building - or in the womb- innocent life must not be taken. All are human beings made in the image of God. Not one of those persons is more important - or less important - than the others.
We, as God’s people, must speak up for babies in the womb. They are the one group that cannot speak up, protest, march or stand for themselves. Let’s boldly get busy! Let’s bring this tragedy to an end!
