Former TV executive Stuart Kellogg is a man on a mission. Though retired, he is hard at work awakening the American church – especially youth and young adults – to the critical need to view the world from a biblical perspective.
His current focus is on training and equipping young “soldiers” to champion the sanctity of human life among their peers and beyond. To that end, Kellogg and his wife, Beth, developed and are implementing the curriculum Students in Action: Building Pro-Life Leaders.
Kellogg noted that while many evangelical church members will “check the box” that they are pro-life, they often lack the specific instruction and training necessary to effectively challenge the dominant secular worldview.
“My goal is to take away the excuse of, ‘Well, we want to do something, but what would we use?’ Well, here it is,” he said.
First things first
Kellogg brings both business experience and academic training to the effort. He earned a master’s degree from Wesley Biblical Seminary (wbs.edu) and studied at the Colson Center for Christian Worldview (colsoncenter.org). Drawing from that background, the Students in Action curriculum begins with a learning module titled “Why Worldview Matters.” The module introduces the concepts of worldview, humanity created in God’s image, a comparison of Christianity and secular humanism, and the basis of morality.
Building on that foundation, subsequent learning modules delve into challenging discussions, including the nature of truth and the histories of the abortion-rights and pro-life movements.
Module 5 is where the rubber meets the road, as students learn to defend the pro-life position in an increasingly pro-choice culture.
“A recent Gallup survey shows 80% of American adults believe abortion should be legal at some point,” Kellogg said. “So, it’s important to understand that you’re going to have a lot of people who disagree with you.”
And that’s why getting the facts straight on abortion is critical, he added. But equally as important is knowing how Christians can effectively engage pro-abortion opponents while honoring Christ with their words and behavior.
Learning by doing
While the Students in Action curriculum focuses on facts and tactics, Kellogg encourages churches to organize hands-on projects with local pregnancy centers. In a pilot program in his hometown, he partnered with the Women’s Care Medical Center in Fairhope, Alabama, to give eight students an up-close look at their work. The students grounded their learning in a real-life context as they toured the facility and heard firsthand testimonies from women who had experienced abortions. Students also worked on fundraising projects for the center, including one with elementary-aged students at a local church.
Getting the ball rolling
Kellogg has kept the onboarding process simple. All five learning modules are available at prolifeleaders.net, with both leader and student books offering guidance for churches to run the program.
The website also provides a contact form for questions and personalized support from Kellogg, and the books are available in print for the cost of printing and shipping.
“Changing hearts is a lot harder than changing law,” Kellogg said. “Far too many people think that with the overturning of Roe [v. Wade], the abortion battle is over, but the hard part has only now begun.
“With the abortion pills more popular than ever, and more than half the abortions now done with medication, this is when the church must work harder than ever to help students truly grasp the pro-life message.”
