American Family Association Reminds Shoppers During Back-to-School Season: Target Stores Still Have Dangerous Fitting Room Policy

Monday, August 19, 2019 @ 08:36 AM

TUPELO, Miss.—A man in Pennsylvania faces multiple charges for drilling holes in fitting room walls at several Target locations so he could photograph women and children while they were changing. According to NBC 10 Philadelphia, the man had more than 60 images of women and underage girls on his phone.

It’s a frightening scenario for those who may be considering back-to-school shopping at Target, says the American Family Association (AFA, www.afa.net), which has been warning families for more than three years that the retailer’s dangerous and misguided restroom and fitting room policy is not family-friendly.

“The Boycott Target Pledge is simple: ‘Until Target makes the safety of women and children a priority, I will shop elsewhere,’” said AFA President Tim Wildmon. “This is actually the fourth back-to-school season when Target has put families at risk by doing nothing to remedy an extremely bad decision to announce an open-door fitting room policy that invites voyeurism. Enough is enough. If Target is not concerned about women and children in its restrooms and changing areas, families will shop elsewhere. It’s that simple.”

AFA continues to keep the Boycott Target Pledge and the faulty Target restroom and fitting room policy in front of Americans because even one woman or girl who is accosted by video voyeurism, or worse, is one person too many.

“It seems as though every summer, as the school year grows closer and more unknowing women and children are shopping for clothes and school supplies, there are incidents throughout the U.S. that traumatize them,” Wildmon added. “Concerned families continue to make a financial impact on a corporation that allows men to use women’s restrooms and dressing rooms. We must keep the pressure on Target by avoiding stores during back-to-school shopping—and all year long.”

AFA is encouraging concerned families to take action in several ways this back-to-school season:

  1. Call Target headquarters at 612-304-6073 (option 2) and personally let executives know you are boycotting their stores.
  2. Forward this information to friends and family. Invite them to sign the #BoycottTarget pledge at afa.net/target. More than 1.5 million have already signed the pledge.
  3. Voice your concerns on Target’s Facebook page.

“As AFA has stated many times,” Wildmon added, “our worries do not stem from fear of the transgender community, but rather from both the real and potential threat that predators and voyeurs would take advantage of the Target restroom policy to harm women and children—and there are plenty of incidents to show that they have.”
