TUPELO, Miss. — The United States Senate has voted to confirm Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the U.S. Supreme Court—and the American Family Association (AFA, www.afa.net) enthusiastically congratulates both Barrett and President Donald J. Trump on this important victory.

Says AFA president Tim Wildmon, “This is an outstanding development in 2020 for all Americans who believe strongly in family values and their deeply held faith. We congratulate Amy Coney Barrett on this achievement and look forward to her actions on the nation’s High Court.”

He also says the U.S. Senate, where Republicans hold a majority, “acted strongly and appropriately” to advance her nomination.

Wildmon adds, “The analysis of research on now-Justice Barrett demonstrates that she has a constitutional philosophy of a limited judiciary. This means she opposes judicial activism, whereby judges act as a super-legislature, writing laws from the bench. Barrett herself has said, ‘What we want in a justice [is] someone who applies the law, who follows the law where it goes and doesn’t decide simply on the basis of partisan preference.’”

When President Donald J. Trump nominated Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court on September 26, 2020, he called her “one of our nation’s most brilliant and gifted legal minds” and “a woman of unparalleled achievement, towering intellect, sterling credentials, and unyielding loyalty to the Constitution.” The president also pointed out, “Amy Coney Barrett will decide cases based on the text of the Constitution as written.”

Barrett had served as a circuit judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit for the past three years. Last Thursday, she was unanimously voted out of the Senate Judiciary Committee by a 12-0 tally. The vote was along party lines—12 Republicans voted in favor of her nomination, while the 10 Democratic members boycotted the vote in protest. On Sunday, the Senate voted 51-48 to limit debate on Barrett’s nomination—thus setting up the full Senate vote on her confirmation for Monday evening.

Barrett, 48, now becomes the third Supreme Court justice nominated by President Trump and confirmed by the Senate. She and her husband, Jesse Barrett, are the parents of seven children, including two adopted from Haiti. Their youngest biological child has Down syndrome. Barrett has said in the past that raising children “is where you have your greatest impact on the world.”
