TUPELO, Miss. — The Senate Judiciary Committee this past Thursday approved Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination to the High Court—and today, the full Senate is expected to vote on her nomination.
The American Family Association (AFA, www.afa.net) is urging all citizens across the nation to call their senators right away—and tell them to confirm Barrett to the Supreme Court.
“The analysis of research on Judge Barrett demonstrates that she has a constitutional philosophy of a limited judiciary,” says AFA president Tim Wildmon. “This means she opposes judicial activism, whereby judges act as a super-legislature, writing laws from the bench. Judge Barrett herself has said, ‘What we want in a justice [is] someone who applies the law, who follows the law where it goes and doesn’t decide simply on the basis of partisan preference.’”
Adds Wildmon, “Americans should take action now. Senators need to be encouraged to stand strong against the coming liberal tsunami of intimidation and hate—and confirm Judge Barrett to the U.S. Supreme Court.”
Wildmon further notes that “when elected officials know the American people are watching them and holding them accountable, they are more likely to do the right thing.”
President Donald J. Trump nominated Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the High Court on September 26, 2020, calling her “one of our nation’s most brilliant and gifted legal minds” and “a woman of unparalleled achievement, towering intellect, sterling credentials, and unyielding loyalty to the Constitution.” The president also said, “Amy Coney Barrett will decide cases based on the text of the Constitution as written.”
Barrett currently serves as a circuit judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. On Thursday, Barrett—a mother of seven, including two children adopted from Haiti—was unanimously voted out of the Senate Judiciary Committee by a 12-0 tally. The vote was along party lines. Twelve Republicans voted in favor of her nomination, while the 10 Democratic members of the committee all boycotted the vote. Today, the full Senate vote is expected to occur—and AFA emphasizes the importance of citizen engagement and involvement on this vital issue for all Americans.
