God, You Have Families’ Attention

Monday, April 06, 2020 @ 02:10 PM

TUPELO, Miss.—For more than 40 years, American Family Association (AFA, www.afa.net) has focused on families, as the organization has helped them come together, educated them about cultural issues that affect all families and provided resources that keep families strong.

As stay-at-home suggestions remain in place through the end of April, families are in challenging situations, with children home from school, parents working from home or even experiencing temporary job loss and stressful news that can create worry. But this is a perfect time for families to unite and grow closer.

“Our ‘new normal’ of life in America has drastically changed over the past several weeks,” said AFA President Tim Wildmon. “Even in these challenges, there is a bright spot for families, and they can reconnect, reset and re-center. We have been forced to stay home and slow down. Our daily distractions have been cut considerably. It’s during this time that we can return to the core of what the family is meant to be. In this journey, AFA is committed to offering prayer, encouragement, biblical resources, lessons in leadership and more. From our previous fast-paced world, we can now pivot to how family should look in the eyes of the Lord. God has slowed everything down, perhaps to contemplate what is important in this life, and He has our attention.”

Wildmon pointed to the many resources AFA offers that can help families during this unprecedented time.

  • One Million Moms: The very active division of AFA focuses on keeping family entertainment clean—especially important with so many children at home and perhaps logging more screen time.
  • Daily Devotionals with American Family Radio producer Rob Gardner: Each week, Gardner offers five days of devotionals that focus on topics such as having a heavy heart, trust, being troubled and God’s will. The April 1 devotion centers on “faith,” as Gardner writes, “It was by faith that Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home and go to another land that God would give him as his inheritance. He went without knowing where he was going (Hebrews 11:8, NLT). Look at the word ‘faith.’ It’s the BIG little word that makes people stumble in accepting the ‘free gift’ of salvation. • AFA Journal: AFA’s monthly magazine covers critical contemporary issues that American families care about. Articles by award-winning writers include everything from church to culture, parenting to politics, activism to anti-Christian bias, education to entertainment. Right now, AFA is offering a free six-month trial of AFA Journal; learn more here.
  • American Family Radio: Daily radio programs on nearly 200 stations nationwide inform, equip and activate individuals to strengthen the moral foundations of American culture and give aid to the church here and abroad in its task of fulfilling the Great Commission. Find a station here.
  • One News Now: Families can stay up to date with news from a biblical worldview with AFA’s news service. Recent coverage includes COVID-19, education, the courts and the economy.
  • The Stand: AFA’s blog site features current topics from AFA’s leaders.
  • Resources for kids: Over the years, AFA has created entertaining and exciting resources for children that families can view together. Just a few of these include the following:
    • Ryan Defrates: Secret Agent” is AFA’s first-ever animated series that aims to affirm, defend and restore Christian values in the culture. The half-hour animated action/adventure series centers on a young spy who has a lot to learn. Ages 6-12.
    • The Torchlighters DVD Set & Activity Book: AFA’s Torchlighters series consists of animated programs about heroes of the faith. It has strong values and educational content for youth ages 8-12.
    • The Covenant Creek Kids: The 47-page hardcover book and audiobook read by the author, Whitney White, tells the story of Brennan and Addison, who, instead of staying home or going to summer camp like their friends, are spending part of their summer vacation with their great-grandparents. Ages 7-12.
