Target’s ‘No Tolerance’ Excuse Is Intolerable

Monday, February 24, 2020 @ 08:37 AM

TUPELO, Miss.—On Jan. 21, the very day that American Family Association (AFA, www.afa.netonce again called on Target to keep men out of women’s restrooms and fitting rooms, a 46-year-old man was arrested for setting up a hidden camera in a fitting room of an Auburn Hills, Michigan, store.

The man is a registered sex offender who was videoing a teen girl changing clothes—a common scenario for such incidents. AFA shared the frightening news in a new Target Action Alert, and WXYZ Detroit reported that the man was charged with surveilling an unclothed person, capturing/distributing an image of an unclothed person, eavesdropping with a device, and two counts of using a computer to commit a crime.

Target’s pathetic response was: “At Target, we have no tolerance for this behavior in our stores.”

“For a company that expresses ‘no tolerance’ for repeated sexual criminal behavior inside its stores, it does absolutely nothing to stem the tide of men entering women’s restrooms and fitting rooms totally and completely unrestricted,” said AFA President Tim Wildmon. “This is what is truly intolerable. Target can claim to care all it wants, but the only real way to prevent sexual assaults against women and girls is for Target to restrict men from certain areas of its stores.”

Thanks to AFA’s powerful #BoycottTarget pledge, nearly 1.6 million shoppers are no longer spending their hard-earned money at Target—either in-store or online.

Since 2016, AFA has warned families about the dangers created by Target’s ill-advised, open-door restroom and fitting room policy, which puts women and children in harm’s way. AFA knows there are still many who may be unfamiliar with Target’s dangerous and ill-advised policy. Therefore, AFA is encouraging concerned Americans to take action in several ways:

Read and respond to the most recent AFA Action Alert on Target’s voyeurism problem.

  1. Call Target headquarters at 612-304-6073 (option 2) and personally let executives know you are boycotting their stores.
  2. Forward the #BoycottTarget information to friends and family, and invite them to sign the pledge. More than 1.6 million have made a commitment not to shop at Target.
  3. Voice concerns on Target’s Facebook page.

“As AFA has stated many times,” Wildmon added, “our worries do not stem from fear of the transgender community, rather from both the real and potential threat that predators and voyeurs would take advantage of the Target restroom policy to harm women and children—and there are plenty of incidents to show that they have.”
