THE STAND Blog is the place to find personal insights and perspectives from writers who respond to current cultural topics by promoting faith and defending the family.
THE STAND Magazine is AFA’s monthly publication that filters the culture’s endless stream of information through a grid of scriptural truth. It is chock-full of new stories, feature articles, commentaries, and more that encourage Christians to step out in faith and action.
TUPELO, Miss. — Despite the pandemic lockdowns exacting a high cost on many businesses, a new report from the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA) revealed that Christian charities actually grew during the COVID-19 pandemic due to generous donations. The report, “Need Is Up — And So Is Giving,” is based on financial statements by 1,800 ECFA members. On average, ministries reported from the start of the pandemic in March, 2020 through December, 2021 that donations increased by 3%. Before the pandemic, in 2019-2020, giving increased at 2.5%. Contributions toward anti-human trafficking organizations increased by a whopping 28.9%, and pregnancy resource centers benefited from a 14.5% jump in donations.
American Family Association (AFA, www.AFA.net) Executive Vice President Ed Vitagliano celebrated the growth of Christian charities during difficult times such as the pandemic, pointing out that providing support is often essential to sharing the Gospel.
“Christians need to be a wellspring of provision for the ministries that meet the needs of the Church and the culture,” Vitagliano said. “This has been a role that Christians have filled since the first century, and it is encouraging to see this report of increased giving during the last, very difficult couple of years. Giving the world the hope that comes from meeting critical needs could very well open hearts to receive the hope of the Gospel message.”
