Age restrictions on books favored by 60% of parents

TUPELO, Miss. — A recent survey titled “Parents’ Perception of School Libraries and Librarians” reported that 60.32% of parents agreed that school libraries should restrict children’s access to certain books based on their age or parental permission. More than half of the parents surveyed suggested that they should be able to receive a notice of the books that their children are checking out and/or should have the ability to sign a form limiting their child’s access to the school’s library. The findings in the study show support for the recent movement towards protecting children from pornographic publications (often smeared as censorship) and the importance of shielding young children from inappropriate and sexualized content.

American Family Association (AFA, www.AFA.net) President Tim Wildmon expresses his concern about the fact that the authority and involvement of parents in schools are dwindling and allowing children to have access to inappropriate content.

“The horror stories continue to multiply regarding the pernicious content made available to children,” said Wildmon. “The problem is that the teachers’ unions and the American Library Association don’t care one iota about what parents think or want for their own children. If these organizations did care, perhaps some middle-of-the-road guidelines could be established. Unfortunately, this situation leaves parents with few choices: overthrow the power of unions and the ALA; move their children elsewhere; or allow their children to be given access to sexualized, Marxist-inspired content. The days when parents could implicitly trust their public schools and libraries have sadly disappeared.”
