We hustle through our daily grind, buried in the mundane and ordinary. Work, chores, errands, and other tasks occupy our hands and minds. But too often, we remain oblivious to the cosmic realities shaping each moment.

Right now, Jesus Christ is enthroned in heaven, ruling the universe “far above all principality and power and might and dominion” (Ephesians 1:21). All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Him (Matthew 28:18). From His sovereign position at the Father’s right hand, Christ also lives to make intercession for His people (Hebrews 7:25).

And astonishingly, Scripture says believers are united to Jesus in this lofty seat of authority. God has “raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:6). United with Him, we now share His privileged access to the Father.

These world-altering truths should drastically impact our lives, infusing transcendent purpose into everything we say and do. Christ’s rule, His continual intercession for us, and our union with Him transform mundane daily living into living with eternal significance.

Christ’s Universal Reign

After accomplishing redemption through His earthly life, death for sins, and resurrection from the dead, Jesus ascended bodily into heaven. God then “seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come” (Ephesians 1:20-21).

Exalted on the supreme cosmic throne, Christ has been installed as undisputed King over the entire universe. Every throne, dominion, and authority - whether earthly governments, angelic rulers, or demonic strongholds - now rank under His supreme authority. As God’s appointed Heir, the Father has put everything in subjection under Jesus’ feet (Hebrews 1:2; 1 Peter 3:22).

From His unmatched position reigning above all rule and authority, Jesus now governs the course of history, according to the Father’s sovereign plan. He actively sustains all creation by His powerful word (Hebrews 1:3). No molecule or galaxy remains outside His dominion. No king, president, or prime minister acts independently of His lordship.

As the preeminent One in whom all God’s fullness dwells (Colossians 1:19), the enthroned Christ wields total authority over all reality. He stands exalted as King of kings and Lord of lords (Revelation 19:16). Nothing happens apart from the reign of the enthroned Son.

Christ’s Continual Intercession

But gloriously, Scripture also reveals Christ lives to intercede for His people, alongside His sovereign rule (Hebrews 7:25; Romans 8:34). As our great High Priest taken into the heavenly sanctuary, Jesus continually bears our cares and needs directly before the Father’s throne.

With an intimate understanding of our weakness, our compassionate Advocate petitions the Father for mercy and help tailored to our situations (Hebrews 4:14-16). Jesus personally dispenses the Father’s limitless grace needed for each moment of life (2 Corinthians 12:9).

So, while carrying out His expanding reign over the cosmos, the enthroned Christ simultaneously intercedes perpetually for His people. No prayer or burden escapes His concern and advocacy before the Father. We can have great boldness and confidence approaching His throne to “obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16). He actively wields His supreme authority to care for us.

Our Union with Christ

By God’s remarkable grace, Scripture says He has made believers alive, raised, and seated with Christ in the heavenly places (Ephesians 2:4-6). Though physically dwelling on earth, positionally, our life has been hidden with Christ in God (Colossians 3:1-3).

This means we now share in His exalted life through spiritual union. In Christ, we have been made new creations and identified with Him in His death and resurrection. We legitimately belong in the heavenly realm as citizens of His kingdom. Like a branch grafted into a rich root system, we derive our life from our vital link with the living Christ. He is a new governing reality within us.

Seated with Christ, we can draw freely upon His inexhaustible riches and resources for daily living (Philippians 4:19). Our faithful High Priest ensures we lack nothing. The dimensions of this transcendent arrangement with Him impact everything.

Implications for Daily Life

The realities of Christ’s supremacy, His perpetual advocacy for us, and our union with Him transform daily life dramatically and imbue our mundane earthly routines with divine purpose.

Recognizing Christ’s current dominion over history and the cosmos impacts our private worship and prayer. As we realize each moment unfolds beneath His watchful rule, religious routines become dynamic exchanges with the living Person ruling creation. We enter His courts overflowing with praises for the King whose nail-pierced hands now wield all authority for His beloved church. And knowing He listens attentively as Intercessor High Priest makes prayer a soaring experience.

Mundane daily tasks shine with fresh glory against the backdrop of Christ’s supremacy over all. No earthly task can be seen as drudgery anymore when the omnipotent God-man oversees all from heaven. Whether driving kids to school, running business reports, or cleaning bathrooms, we carry out earthly duties now as joyful servants of the universe’s supreme King. We can maintain vehicles, craft strategic plans, and design marketing campaigns all unto His glory because He truly is Lord over every square inch.

As we come to live in light of Christ’s lordship and our union with Him, He transforms us into vessels of His grace. In hospitals, courtrooms, and homeless shelters … wherever obedience takes us, our Spirit-led service channels Christ’s compassion into a broken world.
